Last night I hung out with my Mom and we started talking about what she used to do when she was my age. She told me that her and my dad couldn’t afford a Nintendo when they first came out, so they would treat themselves to renting the system from a blockbuster. Its safe to say they didn’t sleep for three days straight trying to beat Zelda. Once they could afford a Nintendo (living the big life) my Mom said she would play day and night. She was hooked. Zelda and Mario were her poison and she couldn’t get enough. At first I wasn’t impressed until she started to tell me that there was no internet for cheat codes, no walkthrough guides you could purchase to help you on your quest to saving the princess. She then found the fabled “Nintendo Hotline” which was as pricy as a long distance call and it was all down hill from there. What I’m getting at is, the Nintendo brought my Mom and Dad together for long nights in front of the gaming console. Romantic? In the geek world.. Very.

This inspired me to create a Top 10 – 8 bit couples. Using only what I could find on Etsy, here is a list I have compiled of love in the 8 bit world. ( I do recognize I have missed a few popular romantic 8 bit couples, but like I said, restricted with only what I could find on etsy, I was limited. Use your imangination!) Here they are, and I hope they spark a little bit of somethin-somethin with your geeky someone.

#10- Donkey Kong and His Barrel

This may not be a REAL relationship, but I think it’s worthy of noting that Donkey Kong has a thing for his barrel. Monkeys and Barrels just have a thing going that you can’t help but recognize. Maybe the barrel full of monkeys game has DK brainwashed to think that they just belong together. Either way, it’s sorta cute the way he’s always got a hold of that perky barrel of his.

Have you ever been around someone you like so much, that every time you see them, they just make you giggle? Dr. Marios love for pills is more then just love. It’s one of those creepy obsessive loves that end in you living in a mental ward, or prison. With a title of Dr. it makes it more socially acceptable that Mario have a thing for pills. They do ward off those nasty looking virus monsters afterall.

#6-Mega Man Zero and Ciel

Don’t you hate it when you fall in love with a reploid and disreguard the fact that you are a human? It only ends in heart-break if you ask me. Ciel and Zero  had a relationship such as this. As in, there really wasn’t one. At the end of MMZ4 Ciel says  ”I” then hesitates before continuing “I believe in you” possibly signifying she was going to say “I love you” . All isn’t fair in robotics and love.

There is rumor that Luigi and Princess Daisy have a special connection. A crush really. It started to bud at hints that Luigi fancied Daisy. In all of the games that feature Daisy as a playable character, there are hints everywhere that she was the intended match for him. This is one of the longest crushes I have heard of. Luigi needs to grow a pair and ask her out already!

Mr. & Mrs. Pacman are a pretty simple couple. They met in 1982 on a routine ghost hunting expedition. While Mrs. Pacman was in pie-mouths length of the delicious cherry, so was Mr. Pacman, thus sharing their first cherry filled kiss. Ah, sweet sweet 8 bit bliss!

#2- Mario and Princess Peach

Does one ever tire of a “Save the Princess” tale? Well, Mario doesn’t seem to think so. Instead of buying some security cams and getting an extra bolt on the door, Mario likes to be the Hero every now and again and doesn’t mind saving Peach when Bowser steals her away. Toadstool approves of this timeless knight in levi overalls and we all know Peach loves her Italian stallion. I think they need to finally roll out the wedding bells for this -forever- dating couple. Even Gene Simmons knows when to propose.

#1- Link and Princess Zelda

The number one 8 bit couple. Since Zelda was the name of the game, and had an overall active presence in the Zelda chain of games, I think this courageous duo deserves to take the cake. They even have their own song! The fan base surrounding this couple is huge. Don’t believe me? Google: Link and Zelda cosplay and prepare to be swept away in a sea of golden hair and pointy ears. I personally love all of these games, and know my whole family has years invested in aiding Link to save his princess.
