I went through a phase of making hand-sewn artisan bears. On a whim, I decided to try using polymer clay to make footpads and the claws for the bears. I had never used polymer clay before, but I realized I had a knack for it and it wasn’t long before it became my main crafting medium. Pretty soon I was sculpting realistic skulls, life-size scorpions, and detailed Fallout miniatures. I still can’t believe those are the first items I decided to create, having no introduction into working with polymer, but I’m glad I did. I had fun trying new things, and wasn’t afraid of messing up because there wasn’t much of a financial commitment attached to the craft.
Polymer clay may be a cheaper craft material than, say, mohair or oil paint, but the art created is no less beautiful because of it. It’s an extremely versatile medium. It can be sculpted, textured, painted, carved, mixed with other elements, and layered over other objects. It is commonly made into jewelry and beads, but can also be used for everything from sculptures and masks to pens and business card holders.
It also translates nicely into geeky items, such as this Fallout Eye Bot and C3PO earrings!

This Onix sculpture by YellerCrakka measures about 3″ tall and sits on a wooden base. I love the texture of the rocky segments. It looks just like the real deal! There are more Pokemon sculptures and geeky charms on YellerCrakka’s DeviantART and Etsy shop.
And the fairy sculpture to the left by HalloWeenPixie is just about too amazing for words! The fairy’s head measures 1″. This is some incredible sculpting and painting detail for such a tiny object! It includes eyelashes made of recycled rabbit fur and sits on a wooden base.
I love this winged green turtle shell necklace by JustJB. It has classic Mario elements with a more realistic twist. I especially love the patina (the dark color in the cracks) on the wings. She also offers red, blue, metallic, and spiked varieties!
Ready to make your own polymer creation? I’ve created a simple tutorial for making an open book charm. I’ve made these for Myst books, spell books, and sketch books, but they can be adapted into any geeky book of your choice. Please visit my DeviantART page for the tutorial. The picture below is my finished example.

These are stunning! That fairy looks so real!! The things people can make with polymer clay always amazes me xx
I used to make dollhouse miniatures when I was a kid, and geeky things as I got older, but haven’t used polymer clay since then (at least 5 years ago). This article makes me want to pick it up again!
Thank you so much for featuring my work! I’m very honored!
