Geek and Sundry Review

11 Apr

If you haven’t heard, geek icons Felicia Day (aka Melvin’s Girlfriend for a day at ComicCon) and Wil Wheaton (aka Sparks McGee) are the masterminds behind a new youtube channel called Geek and Sundry. It’s the best collection of geekery on the net and I can’t wait to tell everyone about it!

Melvin and Trollboy with Felicia Day and cast of THE GUILD at ComicCon!

Basically, there are 6 programs:

Monday: The Flog
Tuesday: The Guild (Season 5 starts April 10th)
Wed: Dark Horse Motion Comics/Written by a Kid (July 16th)
Thursday: Guild extras (New Bonus Content!)
Friday: Tabletop/Sword and Laser (With alternating bonus material!)

Obviously, not all of them have premiered yet (The Guild comes out April 10!!!), but here’s a quick review of the ones I’ve seen!

The Flog
This is Felicia’s blog. She adorable and charming, as always. I giggled my way through it, finding the first half amusing. The choppy video style (where she cuts to say something under her breath or as an aside) is a little much, but it’s 100% forgivable because of it’s comedic value. The best part of the episode was when she took her love for MMO blacksmithing and decided to try it in real life, wanting to gain a better understanding of what a skill of 300 in blacksmithing really means. The entire situation of apprentice Felicia with non-gamer master blacksmith was hysterical and made the entire show AWESOME. Definitely worth watching…and continuing to watch to see what she does next week!

Tabletop
In Tabletop, Wil Wheaton hosts a tabletop game with a bunch of fellow geeks. In the first episode, he plays and reviews the game Small World. I’ve never heard of it, so I was very appreciative of his explanations of the rules, with helpful animations of in game graphics. Wil clearly had a firm understanding of the game and articulated it well in the game setting when playing with a couple noobs. The noobs (Sean Plott-host of “Day9TV”, a Starcraft II dedicated webcast on how to be a better gamer, Grant Imahara-host of Discovery Channel’s “Mythbusters”, and Jenna Busch-geek blogger, writer and host) knew the rules, but weren’t masters of strategy. I was a little disappointed by how defeatist the noobs were in the beginning when they did their little confessionals about who would win. We know Wil is a geek and is a master of all…but I want to believe that everyone on this game is just as submerged in this as he is! I wanted to see some confident smack talk! Regardless though, it was definitely an epic game with lots of twists–you should definitely check it out!

All in all, I am amazed by the potential of this channel. I think there are great minds behind it and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the programming shapes up to be. Go watch it! Stop reading…and go watch it!!

And then come back. Because Melvin misses you.
