Concept Art: Landscape by Delun

Whether you’re walking across a creaking rope bridge to a cliff-side hut, perched precariously above sparkling turquoise waters in Myst, or sitting in the cold light in moldering, bloody ruins in Dark Souls, beautifully executed scenery adds a wonderful element to games, and makes them even more absorbing.

I love landscape art, whether in games, paintings, or photography. It’s my favorite eye-candy and bonus points if there are fantasy elements. It doesn’t have to be a serene mountain-scape for me to find it beautiful (although those are my favorite to paint). I love the scenery in Fallout 3- if you stand in a house in Minefield and see the peeling, stained wallpaper, the stagnant, brown water in the bathtub, and the tiny dust mites drifting through the air, you really feel like you’re there. All the fine details combine to create another world.

One can only guess what stories these gorgeous worlds hold,  but it certainly appears the travelers in the painting above  by Delun are on an incredible adventure. Read on for more!

Dust by KennethFairclough

This digital painting by KennethFairclough reminds of a Bartertown-type world, only without Tina Turner and her hideous get-up. I love the airships in the misty distance and the gasmask-clad denizens.

God’s Steps by Noah-kh

This colorful and detailed painting is by Noah-kh. The architecture is beautiful, but I wouldn’t want to get any closer to the creatures at the temple steps.

Project RPG Concept Art by noiprox

This creepy and beautiful painting by noiprox is concept art for an action RPG in the works that is set to be released next year. What you are viewing is indeed a very large skeletal hand, of a god that has been dead for 1000 years, whose corpse divides the land. I want to play this! You can find more info on it here.

Skyrim, goodmorning by Jorian89

I’m not usually too excited about photo manipulation, but this Skyrim inspired piece by Jorian89 is gorgeous.

Rise by Rahll

More concept art, this one for a film. I love the feeling of distance and expanse in this painting. Check out more concept art for the film and the rest of Rahll’s gallery here.

Stage III: A Curious Light by twistedoakpress

This intricate and haunting pencil drawing by twistedoakpress looks like it belongs in a fantasy novel. I love that there are just enough trees and foliage to give the impression of a tangled forest, without it overwhelming the picture. Be sure to check out his other fantastic and whimsical prints for sale.

Path of Enlightenment by Jonsama

I love the dramatic evening light in this acrylic painting by Jonsama. It almost has a colored pencil feel with the fine stalks of pink grass and wispy clouds.

The Messengers by chvacher

This foreboding painting by chvacher is oil on canvas. I love the prominence of the weather in this painting, obvious in the flattened grass, windblown capes on the men ascending the hill, and the lightening in the distance. Have a look at the rest of his gallery – in addition to other awesome fantasy paintings are a plethora of concept pieces for movies such as Enchanted, Flushed Away, 9, and the tv show Transformers Prime.

Need some of this fantasy awesomeness to hang on your wall? Several of the pieces above are available as prints, or check out the Etsy gallery below!
