For this week’s song, we’re travelling back in time to the 70s (Life on Mars style!) to check out some Bowie weirdness!
The Song: “Starman” by David Bowie
Didn’t know what time it was, the lights were low
I leaned back on my radio
Some cat was layin’ down some rock’n'roll lotta soul, he said
Then the loud sound did seem to fade
Came back like a slow voice on a wave of phase
That weren’t no DJ that was hazy cosmic jive
There’s a starman waiting in the sky
He’d like to come and meet us
But he thinks he’d blow our minds
There’s a starman waiting in the sky
He told us not to blow it
‘Cause he knows it’s all worthwhile
He told me,
“Let the children lose it
Let the children use it
Let all the children boogie”
The Artist: David Bowie (actually born David Jones) is a well-known figure in the geek world, not only for his unique music, but also for his role in such geek classics as Labyrinth. His first hit was the still-popular Space Oddity, and he had hits both in the UK and the US. He has collaborated with many artists, including Queen, Philip Glass, and Brian Eno. Bowie is still making music to this day.

Interesting factoid: David Bowie was my first crush. All the other little kidlets were innocently lusting after, I dunno, whatever cute boy pop groups were popular at the time, and I was transfixed by Space Oddity. Guess it stands to reason that I grew up decidedly odd.
Also, I’m now envisioning some kind of magical timey-wimey Life on Mars Meets Doctor Who crossover extravaganza. You know, like the Flintstones meets the Jetsons, only with more Jon Pertwee. Is that TOO nerdy?
