The long-awaited Diablo III has finally been released, and all over the world people have been sucked back into the world of Sanctuary in order to investigate a fallen star. But, as always, there’s so much more to it than that.
Melvin and I have been trying out the different character classes: Wizard, Witch Doctor, Demon Hunter, Monk and of course the Barbarian. Read on to see what we think of the characters and the gameplay, and find out if Melvin believes that the wait was worth it!
Wizard
Of the different choices of characters to play, I always lean towards a character with magic abilities. So the wizard was the first choice for me. In Diablo III, the wizard is a spellcaster, using arcane and elemental magic to create offensive spells. With all of the characters, you are able to set a primary and secondary offensive skill (Magic Missile and Arcane Power for the wizard have been my favorites so far), and then four other skills that are used with your set hotkeys. There are also passive skills that you can set that just become a part of your character. Right now, I’m loving my Ice Armor conjuration skill. Every time a melee attacker hits you when this is activated, they freeze. The wizard is a fun character to use, especially if you love the spell aspect, but still like to get into the thick of things. You can cast spells from a distance or in the center of the action.
Witch Doctor
Witch Doctor. Zombie Dogs. Jars of spiders. Firebats. Need I say anything more? This character is freaking awesome. It took me a little time to adjust to the idea of working with a character that excels in long distance offensive attacks. But once I did, I realized this class is fantastic. Enemies around the corner? Summon your zombie dogs, throw a few jars of spiders, and you’re free to loot and plan where you want to go next while your minions do your dirty work. I also love the little pack of zombie dogs running around with me… if only I could send them to town with some loot to make me some money.
Demon Hunter
The Demon Hunter is badass. I played the female demon hunter, and not only is she gorgeous, but she’s quick and tough. The resource system for this character is based on Hatred and Discipline. The demon hunter uses a combination of marksmanship and trap setting. Hatred fuels the bow attacks while Discipline fuels the traps. I love the strategic part of this character, setting traps and staying just out of reach while the assault continues. I’m more used to melee combat, but playing the demon hunter is just too fun, and she is quickly becoming my favorite character.
Monk
I was really excited to try out the monk. Just the idea of fighting monks is awesome to me. The monk is a more elegant take on the melee character, and so much fun to play. I am partial to melee characters, I love getting right in the middle of a fight, but I also like quicker moving characters. Lithe characters usually equals not so tough-skinned, but with the monk, it’s the best of both worlds. Plus, the Wave of Light skill is crazy. You call down a huge holy bell from the heavens and then hit it, shooting a wave of light at your enemies. I just love how extreme it looks to summon a holy bell in the middle of a fight.
Barbarian
The Barbarian is always the best go-to character when you want big, tough, simple and strong. And this barbarian doesn’t disappoint. Probably because he is actually the same barbarian from Diablo II. He’s aged a bit, but he still has his fury sustained attacks and stout exterior that we all know and love. If you want to decimate the opposition, he’s the one who will do it the messiest.
So there’s my little take on the characters, but here is an interesting article about which classes game developers like the best! You can read it here.
All in all, Diablo III was incredibly worth the wait. Co-op games are even more fun now than before due to the shared looting. The scenery and weather changes immensely from location to location. Resplendent Chests and Treasure Goblins… if you haven’t played the game yet, you need to get on it. Think of it as a cheap time machine.
