Mario Bento!

mario bento boxHey!  It’s-a me!  Mario!

It was announced at E3 that there will be a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii, which of course, made me hungry.  And Melvin has been asking me to make a bento box for him, so I figured why not make one in honor of our favorite Italian plumber?  If you would like to learn how to impress everyone with a deliciously fun lunch box, read on!

For this Mario inspired bento box, you will need:

bento ingredientsMario Bento Box

  • 1 sheet nori (seaweed)
  • 2 grape tomatoes
  • a few leaves of spinach
  • rice, cooked
  • 1 slice lunchmeat, light in color- I used turkey
  • 1 slice white cheese- I used provolone
  • 1 slice American cheese
  • sriracha

Step 1:  Cut out assorted shapes for the details of Mario and Yoshi.  From the seaweed cut out 4 circles for pupils, a moustache, an outline of a nose, a sideburn and 2 elongated pupils.  From the yellow cheese, cut out a square and star.  From the white cheese, cut out 1 small circle for Mario’s hat, 2 larger circles for Yoshi’s eyes, an even larger circle for Yoshi’s cheek, a neck for Yoshi and a question mark.  Slice the 2 grape tomatoes in half and keep 3 of the halves.  Cut the slice of lunch meat into a Mario face shape.  From the spinach cut out the top of a cheek for Yoshi, a round nose for Yoshi and a big eye area for Yoshi.

Step 3:  Line the top and  bottom of the container with some sort of food- at first I lined the entire container with grapes, but later changed it to sliced hot dogs because I wanted some extra protein.  If you can count hot dogs as protein.

Step 4:  Arrange your Mario and Yoshi face on opposite sides of your bento box.  Place the details accordingly on each face.  I used the sriracha for Mario’s hat, but feel free to use a tomato or radish to create a hat.

Step 6:  Put other foods in the box to keep all of your pieces tightly together.  I rolled up some other slices of lunchmeat to fill up the space.  You could use broccoli, cauliflower, or anything that you like!

Step 7:  Show off your exciting lunch to anyone nearby and watch them eye your food with envy.
