Sunday is Father’s Day, the best day of the year to celebrate the amazing guys in our lives! Melvin’s Dad is pretty awesome, and I’m sure your Dad is too… but there is one Dad that sticks out a bit in my mind. And that would be Mr. Anakin Skywalker. Melvin and I wanted to make a recipe this week to pay tribute to one of the most complicated and bad ass Dads in geek history. And so we present to you… THE DARK SIDE BURGER. Come along with us and learn how to make this extremely simple and tasty burger, perfect for any Father’s Day dinner!
This recipe was inspired by a Darth Vader burger made in France. The burgers were never created in the US, much to my chagrin. The recipe for the hamburger buns is from Taste of Home, with my addition of the black food coloring. You will need:
DARK SIDE BURGER
- 2 tbsp active dry yeast
- 1 cup and 2 tbsp warm water
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp salt
- 3 to 3-1/2 cups flour
- black food coloring
Step 1: In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water. Add the oil and sugar, let stand for 5 minutes.
Step 2: Add the egg and salt, stir. Drop in about 1/2 tsp of black food coloring. Add the flour cup by cup until you have enough in there to form a soft dough.
Step 3: Drop your dough onto a floured surface, I just used my counter top. Knead until the dough feels smooth and elastic-y, about 3 to 5 minutes.
Step 4: Divide this ball into 12 little balls. Place onto greased baking sheets.
Step 5: Cover for 10 minutes.
Step 6: Place the baking sheet into a 425° oven. Bake for 8 to 12 minutes.
Step 7: Let the buns cool and then slice in half with your lightsaber. Create your own delicious burger or sandwich using these Dark Side Buns.
Step 8: Use the Force to destroy the Dark Side. And by “the Force” I mean your mouth, and by “the Dark Side” I mean these delicious burgers.
