Avengers vs. X-men #5 (of 12)
Well… this was unexpected. That is probably what Marvel wants you to think after reading this fifth issue of AvX. And in truth, it is unexpected. However there are two types of unexpected. There is the thrilling type of unexpected like at the end of the movie “Psycho” where we find out Norman Bates and his mother are the same person (there is only a decade moratorium on spoiler alerts). Then there is the anticlimactic unexpected like at the end of the movie “Contact” where we find out aliens are total dicks for thinking showing up as someone’s dead father is a good idea. The type of unexpected you feel after the final page of this issue will largely depend on who you are. Personally, I like it, but I was hardly enamored with this turn of events.
What makes a fight interesting is wondering who is going to win. If the fight is one sided, then people will lose interest because their minds have already predicted the next chain of events. That’s kind of what Marvel has done here. The fight feels very one sided now, but I haven’t lost interest in what is going to happen next. We know the Earth won’t be destroyed because that’s where Marvel keeps all of its stuff, so there is always hope to turn things back to an even playing field. That’s probably why I liked this unexpected turn of events. The Phoenix Force has landed, but it still feels like it’s anyone’s ballgame.

Spawn #220
Spawn and I have a love/hate relationship. Sometimes he gets drunk and beats me up, while later leaving me alone for months at a time. The problem is… I hate it when he leaves me alone. The comic book “Spawn” can have excellent moments that will impress you, but only if you stick with it. This comic has been a mixed bag of awesome and semi-interesting story setup. “Spawn” is just coming off its heels from the fight between Spawn and Malebolgia to celebrate its twentieth anniversary. While the last few issues have been an awesome Spawn beat down, this issue brings us back to leaving us alone while it sets the stage for the next chain of events. I love “Spawn” and its story, but I hate that it spends so much time standing around. I understand why it does it, so we don’t scratch our heads when everything hits the fan, but it’s how it deliveries the story that is the issue. Sometimes the set up dialogue works, but sometimes it doesn’t. It mostly does work when characters are interacting with each other, especially if one of those characters is Clown. It doesn’t really work however when it’s mostly Spawn doing internal dialogue. Better known as talking to yourself. This particular issue has a little too much of the latter. I still secretly love “Spawn”, even when I hate it. I’ve thought about leaving him a few times, but he always seems to slap me back to my senses just in time.
Also, in a shameless plug to myself, check out Bruce Osborne on Facebook. I post/link all my stuff there, including chapters on a book I’m working on. Feel free to hit the ‘Like’ button as if you’re an addict.
I also write publish works of fiction on my Bruce Osborne Blog. Feel free to read, follow, or even hate my stuff. I don’t care if people like it, only that they read it.
There are too many movies for me to review in full, so I created a twitter account to give brief opinions on the many movies I view. If you wish to read my smart ass remarks, follow M.O.V.I.E. Reviewer @MutantOpossum.
