A legend has returned to Saturday nights on Cartoon Network: Toonami. Obviously this isn’t hot off the presses news, but I have many friends that are quite ecstatic about this and I have to say that I myself am fairly pleased. While Adult Swim’s Saturday night Toonami lineup isn’t the Toonami of my childhood, I can still appreciate that Cartoon Network has given anime a proper nod. The lineup itself isn’t actually too shabby, either (especially compared to the abysmal lineup circa 2007-08); this reawakening of Toonami includes time-honored favorites such as Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and Bleach, along with some newer shows like Deadman Wonderland. Today marks a month since Toonami had the life breathed back into it and I thought it only appropriate to pay proper homage with some w Bebop and Ghost in The Shell-inspired looks that are perfect for surviving the summer heat, so read on!
Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop, it goes without saying, is not a woman who you want to mess with; but I think after waking from a 50-year coma, having retrograde amnesia, and getting totally screwed over in a world you know nothing about, you’re allowed to have an attitude and a few vices. By a few vices I mean that she’s a bounty hunting gambling fiend and you certainly don’t want to be on the other side of her gun (or any other kind of firearm in her possession). True, Faye may have more than just a few vices, but no matter what, she‘s a killer babe and a rather strong female character. If you want to channel some Faye into your summer look, really all it takes is a red shrug (which is perfect if the indoors is frigid even though it may be topping 100 outside), yellow V neck tank top, shorts (if you want to go for a really bold statement go with yellow shorts), and some suspenders. In the end you’ve got a bright versatile summer look and you’ve added a dash of Faye to your day!

It’s pretty impossible to discuss badass women in anime without bringing up Major Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in The Shell. She works as a highly advanced cyborg within Japan’s off-the-record organization of Section Nine, taking part in everything from covert infiltration operations to full-on military raids, all with time to prove herself an impossibly good hacker – she easily draws admiration and commands respect from enemies and allies alike. “The Major,” as she’s regularly referred to as, is the lethal, awing female lead of the series and is unapologetically sexy to boot.
Living in the a future nearly two decades from today, her appearance is thoroughly modern with hints of cyberpunk, though nevertheless revolves around simplicity and practicality (after all, jumping across rooftops and apprehending robot-enhanced terrorists requires some real freedom of movement). Most times she is sporting what essentially looks like a high cut strapless leotard, a jacket, thigh highs and boots, all with the aforementioned cyberpunk influence. If that little coverage isn’t your thing, just go for a silver leotard, an amazing cyberpunk shrug, some satin shorts, and a pair of combat boots. You still get the overall feel of the Major’s look but just a bit toned down for the day-to-day.

Obviously I’ve just touched the very tippy top of the iceberg when it comes to boss women in anime, but believe me there will be more to come in time.
