I’ve been moving this week. I think it’s something we all dread (the packing and unpacking) and look forward to (moving to a better place.) This move has been particularly interesting for me. A year and half ago my husband lost his job and we were forced to live with relatives for much longer than planned. We moved from Wendover, Nevada, to Boise, Idaho, and then back to Wendover again when my husband was offered a job. Almost all of our items have been in storage for nearly two years and we’ve been busily blowing dust off things long forgotten and throwing away very expired Crisco and vitamins.
I am excited to unbox all of my favorite knick knacks and paintings and decorate our new place, but after almost two years of feeling like a squatter, I think I deserve a couple of new home décor items as well.
If you’re planning on moving out of the basement, or just want to perk it up, check out this awesome wish list of items sure to make any geek feel at home.
What’s more home-y than a hand-stitched sampler? If cross-stitch reminds you of your grandmother, just take a look at the photo above. It has a classic sentiment, but with a cute Mario Bros. twist, worthy of gracing the walls of any gamer’s castle.

I think rooms look very pulled together if there is a pleasing color scheme. Not everything has to be matchy-match, but a few pieces here and there that compliment the couch or sheets go a long way to giving the room appeal.
Like blue and purple? This serene oil fantasyscape would look gorgeous in your bedroom (and I may have to add it to mine as well.) Prints are available from .49 and up! How could you say no?
You’re going to need some items to match. Check out the awesome items below in complimentary colors!
Black and white can be just as interesting as a palette of colors, especially with accents of another bright color. This amazing handcrafted NES controller rug would fit right in.
I looove this shop, and have yet buy anything from it. There are so many amazing pieces it’s hard to choose! This mug would look great in your kitchen or as a display piece in your living room.
More monochrome goodies for your room:
From my experience, most bathrooms have a theme as well as a color scheme, but don’t be tempted to do the ol’ fish and ocean theme. There are so many themes you can do: Nintendo, retro robots, Star Wars… Mine is Japanese-themed, with framed postcards from penpals, vintage teapots, and washcloths and accessories from Japan. If you don’t have a penpal or friend in Japan, one of my favorite sites for authentic Japanese merchadise is jbox.com. They have about every Japanese item you could want, including books, kitchen supplies, toys, clothing, and food.
How about an adorable Totoro washcloth?
Or a Rilakkuma bath mat?
