Spider-men #1 (of 5)

SpiderMen_1_CoverVariant_Ramos

I’m so conflicted about this comic, I’m not even sure I should write about it. My brain just can’t come to a consensus on how I feel about “Spider-Men”. When it was first announced, I thought it was going to be some kind of crossover of regular Spider-man and the Scarlet Spider. You know, because that would make sense. Instead it’s a crossover of regular Spider-man and Ultimate Spider-man. Now for those who live under a rock, the Ultimate universe Peter Parker is dead and has been replaced with Miles Morales. An ire was raised by old people who don’t read comics because Miles was Black/Latino (not sure which half they were upset about), but that issue was dismissed once they were distracted by something shiny. Now Marvel has decided to do the crossover thing, and I have mixed feelings on it.

I didn’t feel that this comic was bad, but just really unnecessary. Even the plot point of how Peter Parker got to the Ultimate universe feels forced and just a cheap excuse. Except for premise set up, nothing really happens in this comic either. It’s just one of those comics that doesn’t do must to impress on a first date, but leaves with a sense that this might be a beautiful friendship if you give it the chance. It still doesn’t help matters that I’m conflicted about continuing to read this comic. I just feel like I want to keep reading, but don’t want to actually pay for it.

Batman #10

Penultimate, adjective, meaning next to the last.

I don’t usually review penultimate issues because if you’re not involved by that point, you’re not going to be. However this issue is so perfect it bears mentioning. Scott Snyder’s run on “Batman” barrels down into its climax with unexpected results. The Court of Owls has failed to take the night from Batman and now the dark knight has a chance to go on the offensive. Things don’t turn out as Batman nor reader intends for them to, but that is what makes the issue so much fun. Plot points from issues past converge towards the end of the comic and are recited off like lines in an excellent mystery novel. The tension is built up to an unbelievable boil and it all leads to a startlingly discovery. It’s so startlingly that you don’t believe it at first, and still have lingering doubts about it long after. A “I am your father” kind of discovery. My blood feels like it’s on fire for the next issue. And you know what? There should be a lot more comics out there that make you feel that way.
