Avengers vs. X-men #6 (of 12)

AvX went from loveable to likeable to loveable again. After a couple of tame set up issues to lead up the curveball game changer in the last issue, we finally get what is probably the best AvX issue so far. A beautifully written issue by contributor Jonathan Hickman that shows what would happen if the X-men got their wish at a better world. It’s a story that is fluid, deep, and showcases themes from nearly fifty years of X-men comics. Issue six also takes the time to tell this part of the story instead of feeling like a mini-episode like previous issues. I haven’t done an official page count, but this issue at least feels twice as long and even a little heavier than past AvX comics. While I’m sure this brave new world is only temporary, it is nice to see the X-men get it right for a change.

My only lingering issue with this comic is that I keep wanting to side with the X-men. The Avengers have their hearts in the right place, but they are the ones who keep launching preemptive strikes against the X-men. It’s like if a S.W.A.T. team kept busting into my house to look for a meth lab that isn’t there. I don’t have an issue with cops looking for meth labs, but I obviously don’t have the means. I don’t have the chemistry background, terminal cancer, or shaved head to pull off building a meth lab. I don’t know if Marvel purposely wants you to side with the X-men, but several characters reflect their jaded opinions about the Avengers’ actions. Still, I probably would have sided with the X-men anyway, so maybe it’s my personal preference. I’m secretly a mutant but hide to avoid persecution. It’s like being gay, but I can shoot lasers out of my nose.

The New Avengers #27

Okay, I have a confession. I was hating this AvX at first. Not that the story and/or art was really bad, but it just seemed to be a side story that had no real bearing on the AvX story at hand. After the last few issues, we finally learn that this is not the case. In fact this story might end up being very important to the AvX plot. Issue #27 ends the Kung Fu Phoenix story with an ambiguous end, but it turns out to just be a lead in to Hope Summers being trained by the Iron Fist dudes. This might end up having a profound effect on the overall AvX story, especially considering it was teased in AvX #6 (which I recommend you read before this issue) and who ends up being Hope’s trainer. Also, this issue had enough good writing and art to warrant reading it regardless of its effect on AvX. The art particularly is very good in this issue. I’ve always enjoyed Mike Deodato and Rain Beredo’s work on New Avengers, but they seem to have outdone themselves this time. It’s a big reason why I consider this article a confession. I feel like it was a sin for doubting its awesomeness.
