Oils, marble, porcelain… Tried and true materials that have been around for centuries. The results are gorgeous, but maybe a little predictable. My topic this week is on materials and art that mix it up and make you go, “that’s made out of what?” Check out these conversation starters!
This necklace is super cute, but I bet if it weren’t for the caption you’d never guess it was made from a skateboard. Now you can keep your skater vibe with you, even in formal occasions.
Everyone needs a message board, but about the last place I’d think to write, “We went to the store,” is on a faux human skull. But not iamhome! They’ve been selling these skulls since late 2010 and now hundreds of people have unique (and morbid) message centers in their homes. Their skulls come in dozens of colors, including a realistic bone shade.
RecycledReads creates sculpture from books, by folding each page in a precise spot. This bird is mind-blowing and took 1600 folds and 800 pages to create. They also take requests for custom words and initals!
I’m a total post-apocalyptic nerd, so this necklace is right up my alley. It’s in the form of a nuclear bomb and is made from recycled bullet shells!
Ceramic is not an unusual medium, but I’ve never seen a ceramic tic tac toe game before, nor one so kawaii! I have ordered from ooty several times before and I just love her little ghosts.
If you’re a film snob, you’ve got to love these earrings made from real aged film strips. I love the little silver hearts at the bottom.
I never thought concrete could be converted to something pretty, but DrCraze seems to have a talent for just that. I love this gorgeous red heart. The shop has an array of jewelry in different shapes including clouds, broken hearts, and more.
A pretty fish on a shirt. Not too unusual. Until you realize the print was made with an ancient Japanese technique called gyotaku, which involves painting directly onto a fish and then applying it to your canvas. I can’t believe the details. You can see every fin ridge, every bump and speckle. These shirts are awesome!
This little Thinker is not made of bronze and marble, but he’s definitely a work of art and is really cute! He was made from recycled parts, including silverware, and sits on a vintage candy tin.

What an intriguing post, I love it! That recycled bullet shell pendant has got to be my favorite I think!
I have a pair of beetle shell earrings (similar to these: http://www.etsy.com/listing/96110877/wonderful-6-beetle-shell-earrings ) that I absolutely LOVE. Other people like them as well- though not always after finding out what they once were
Awesome post! I love the bullet necklace too – so unique. Thanks so much for featuring my earrings among all these other fun creations!
such a cute post, thanks you so much xo
