Mechanical Wonders

15 Aug

What’s cooler than steampunk? Steampunk contraptions that actually function. Because really, what’s the point of all those gears if they don’t actually do anything? (Besides looking cool, that is.) The following gallery includes amazing inventions and art pieces that would make DaVinci and Atrus proud.

The Braxtonian Lantern by JWKinseysArtifice

This wall sconce features a slowly rotating inner cylinder and displays a star field on the ceiling in a dark room. It looks amazing, and the super fun part? That round knob at the top is the on/off switch.

Personal Reactor by ReactionDesigns

This cool necklace features a tiny “reactor,” composed of sterling silver, brass, titanium, and a glowing glass tube. The front of the pendant slides closed over the tube, where the light then shines through the three portholes in the front.

Steampunk Rotating Gear Heart by CarryTheWhat

Functional steampunk doesn’t have to be expensive. This awesome puzzle heart was 3D printed in metallic plastic. It can be twisted apart and rotated back together. It also comes in a colorful cube variety.

Steampunk 3D Goggles by WillRockwell

Like 3D movies but not the big ugly glasses required? How about a pair of 3D steampunk goggles instead? They are made of brass and leather and feature polarized 3D lenses, and would look equally cool atop your head after the movie is over.

Mother of All Fish by HundleyHandCarved

When I think of something mechanical, I think of metal. But this fish sculpture is entirely hand-carved from wood. The propeller at the back rotates and pushing on it opens the mother fish’s mouth – revealed teeth made from saw blades.

ExoGauntlet Version 2 by BionicConcepts

I frequently used the Power Fist in the Fallout series, but never expected to see anything similar in real life. I don’t know if this gauntlet would be up to punching super mutants, but it will give you the crushing power of 250 psi (according the BionicConcepts, it will bruise a man’s arm and crush metal cans.) The glove is powered by CO2 cartridges and is sure to impress your friends. The shop also features mechanical angel wings and steampunk armor.

Bullet Pen 308 Winchester by awelldressedbullet

If the pen is mightier than the sword, how awesome does that make a pen made from rifle shells? I love this silver model. It’s fully retractable and comes with a spare ink refill.

Mechanical Memory Pendant by back2root

Unless they showed you, I doubt you’d ever know this item was anything but a gorgeous pendant. But if you have precious data you need to carry with you, this USB pendant is the way to go. I love the expert craftsmanship, down to the clasp at the back.

No.6 by Eric Freitas

I have no words for how awesome this clock is. Eric’s DeviantART profile and his website host large galleries with detailed pictures of these astounding works of art. I don’t know whether these clocks are actually for sale anywhere (and I know I couldn’t afford one if they were), but you can purchase signed prints from his website.

The Etsy collection below features creations that don’t actually move or function, but are true to the steampunk spirit. Be sure to click for bigger pictures!
