Spider-men #4 (of 5)
Wasn’t something supposed to happen in this issue? That was my parting thought when I finished the fourth issue of “Spider-men”. This series was promised to change everything. The cover of this issue even had what looks like Ultimate Spider-man dying in the arms of regular Spider-man. The problem is, no one even gets punched in this issue. Sure Peter Parker gets bitch slapped by Ultimate Gwen Stacy and Ultimate Aunt May, but that doesn’t really count. I thought the comic was well written and entertaining on an intriguing emotional level, but nothing really happens. For the comic that is supposed to change everything, it sure is taking its sweet time. Fans of “Ultimate Spider-man” might like this series more than us old folks who still read “The Amazing Spider-man”, but I just have a feeling the fifth and final issue isn’t going to change much. As a non-fan of the Ultimate universe, it was interesting to see Gwen and MJ in emo gear, but it comes off as trend following rather than a true reflection of their characters. Though, to be fair, Gwen has been dead for almost forty years. Long before the first Hot Topic was built.
Batman #12
Wasn’t this supposed to be the epilogue to “The Court of Owls”? This question hit me about three pages into the issue. There is a vague reference to the Owls storyline, but most of the story is just a standalone. Something about a teenage street drifter who discovers Batman hacks into security with boxes he has wired up all over the city. It’s an okay story, but we know it’s just filler until the next major story by Scott Snyder. Maybe if it was an introspective of somebody we already know, the story might have turned out better. It has good writing, but we just can’t be made to feel for a fictional character we don’t know. The character is also too well defined to identify with. Next month is DC’s month of #0 issues, so we still have a ways before the Joker makes his big comeback. While this issue might have been a downturn, the next real issue should make the comic catch on fire.
Also, in a shameless plug to myself, check out Bruce Osborne on Facebook. I post/link all my stuff there, including chapters on a book I’m working on. Feel free to hit the ‘Like’ button as if you’re an addict.
I also write publish works of fiction on my Bruce Osborne Blog. Feel free to read, follow, or even hate my stuff. I don’t care if people like it, only that they read it.
There are too many movies for me to review in full, so I created a twitter account to give brief opinions on the many movies I view. If you wish to read my smart ass remarks, follow M.O.V.I.E. Reviewer @MutantOpossum.
