Sculpture has been around since prehistoric times and can be made from practically any material. I love paintings, but there is something about viewing (and creating) art in three dimensions that I truly love.
I’m used to sculpting tiny figures and jewelry charms, but have recently moved into creating larger scale sculptures. I’ve explored DeviantART and Etsy to see what my peers have made and I’m blown away by their work.
CreaturesFromEl creates fantastical creatures with so much beautiful filigree and detail that it astounds me. I had a very hard time choosing a sculpture from her DeviantART gallery because I love them all. She has amazingly delicate dragons, wolves, birds, and even a Cheshire cat. She also has an Etsy shop where you can make one of these works of art your own.
I would like to have the skill to sculpt human figures someday, like the gorgeous fairy below. Not only do the form and features look realistic, but so do the wings and hair. And the little bits of dirt on her side and shoulder are a nice touch, as if she really were hunting. What do fairies hunt anyway?
I love this Sonic sculpture by MB’s own HouseofIrisGS. I had Nintendo growing up but never Sega, so I have fond memories of running down the gaming aisles of Toys R Us to the Sega demo consoles to play Sonic. Check out the Mario Bros. sculpture as well!
Dinosaurs are awesome. This baby Tyrannosaurus is not only life-like, but life-size as well. The black background and lighting give the photo a nice dramatic feel as well.
This retro futuristic female by Marcus Deleo is expertly sculpted and painted. I love the light glinting off the helmet in this shot.
This photo looks like a shot of a real unicorn wandering through a snowy forest. You can see more shots and other unicorn sculpture by Ethereal-Beings by clicking on the picture.
And if you are interesting in sculpting your own unicorn, this is a great tutorial by Indigo-Ocean.
The kitsune plays a large role in Japanese Shintoism, and this kyuubi is based off of one from the anime, Naruto. The bright orange and the flow of the tails is great.
This steampunk take on R2D2 is brilliant and has a lot of nice detail, like the mesh panels, and little dials on the front.
I had a friend who loved playing Silent Hill, but was afraid to continue his game because he didn’t want to face Pyramid Head. Judging by this amazing sculpture by olgatarta, I can see why. I love the visible veins and his nonchalant pose with his sword. Olgatarta also has an incredible skeleton tutorial here.
I love portrayals of nature spirits, and this dragonesque tree creature is beautiful. Visit EmilySculpts on DeviantART for other seasonal spirits.
I am currently working on my own sculpture of the boss statue from Super Metroid. Feel free to visit my DeviantART gallery to view my completed sculpture of Kraid and let me know what you think.
