Spare Parts

3 Oct

I love anatomy and biology. I never had aspirations for a medical profession, but have always been fascinated with how organic things are created and function.

Not only are body parts interesting, they can also be pretty creepy if they aren’t in their proper place, so I thought they would make a very appropriate  topic for the beginning of October.

Brains

We all love brains! Literally and figuratively. The rubiks cube below isn’t just a puzzle for your brain, it is a brain. It’s amazingly realistic and I love the concept. Freeny’s gallery also includes sculptural anatomy cross-sections of your favorite video game characters and toys, including Mario and Lego men.

Rapscalliondesign has a shop full of geeky and creepy goodies. This juicy pink brain necklace is also a locket, with room for a photo of your favorite zombie.

This headband is a gross and an awesome way to show off your big brains. Perfect for October outfits, and comes in several color varieties.

Hearts

Another very important organ full of metaphoric meaning, the heart is a popular choice for art. Monsterkookies makes amazing anatomical hearts and industrial, steampunk animals. This weighted Companion Cube heart is perfect for Portal lovers.

This surrealistic heart is made of tiny red tanks! It was painted in acrylic on canvas. Check out andycouncil‘s DeviantART gallery for more objects made out of other objects.

I love this little cross stitch. It’s a cute and science-y way to show someone you love them.

Skulls ‘n’ Bones

My mother collects animal skulls. Seems like a strange hobby maybe but she lives in the desert surrounded by badgers, rabbits, coyotes, and other animals whose bones are often found in such places. She is also an artist and has adorned skulls with brass, leather, and Native American patterns. Below are artists who also see the beauty in bones.

I love this bird skull bracelet and I think my mom would too. The skulls were made from polymer clay and crystals, feathers, and chains complete the bracelet.

I suck at using an Etch A Sketch. This skull drawing is incredible. Not only does it look quite hard to make, but I have a lot of respect for artists that make impermanent art.

This gorgeous oil painting was done by Dave Palumbo for the Avacyn Restored expansion of Magic: The Gathering. It reminds me of all those pesky skulls you find strewn about dungeon floors.

If you really have a love for bones, you need this necklace. Billyblue22 also creates human organs, bird skulls, and other creepy items to adorn yourself with.

Guts

I don’t know if it’s because they’ve been over-used in horror movies, or because they are so long and stringy, but intestines look pretty nasty when they are not in their perfect coil. However,  I managed to find some cute guts.

This little appendix brooch is adorable. Perfect if you’re feeling a little empty inside after surgery.

Another snuggly body part, these intestines were made from spandex and look realistic!

This soft, flowery print by theinkpot is the prettiest portrayal of a stomach I’ve seen. Check out their shop for more beautiful organ paintings.
