I honestly can’t think of a way to begin my review of “The Cabin in the Woods.” I don’t want to ruin my review by just coming out and saying it’s awesome. But, the problem is, this movie is completely and totally awesome in almost every way. It helps if you go into the movie cold, so I’ll try and not to ruin anything plot wise. I will say that the film isn’t what you expect it to be. It works in a very similar way to how “Scream” works where it’s really a horror movie about horror movies. However TCITW does a better job of encompassing almost the entire horror genre while “Scream” just focused on slasher films. There is even a reference to “Hellraiser” if you look hard enough. I don’t really consider myself a fan of the horror genre itself, but this is a great film for horror fans and general film buffs alike.
TCITW almost gets everything right, even with its almost satirical approach. The comedic moments aren’t put there for relief, but rather is a stable to the film’s identity. There were only two things about that I didn’t like. One, I didn’t really find it scary. Sure it dumps gallons of blood by the end and can get very tense and creepy. But it doesn’t maintain these feelings long enough to keep it scary. It’s hellishly good entertainment, but nothing that made me sleep uneasy. My second problem was the ending. I just didn’t buy it. I applaud them for being different, but they made an ending that was more convoluted than it needed to be. There is just no way someone would fight so hard to stay alive and then just except death a minute later. It kind of felt like a cop out. Despite that, I still thoroughly enjoyed myself. TCITW is probably the best horror movie since the “Dawn of the Dead” remake. It just has a few flaws and is built upon the backs of the genre itself which keeps it from being completely original. It’s still required viewing for anyone who even casually likes movies. Make it the very next movie you watch.
Also, in a shameless plug to myself, check out Bruce Osborne on Facebook. I post/link all my stuff there, including chapters on a book I’m working on. Feel free to hit the ‘Like’ button as if you’re an addict.
I also write publish works of fiction on my Bruce Osborne Blog. Feel free to read, follow, or even hate my stuff. I don’t care if people like it, only that they read it.
There are too many movies for me to review in full, so I created a twitter account to give brief opinions on the many movies I view. If you wish to read my smart ass remarks, follow M.O.V.I.E. Reviewer @MutantOpossum.

I wish I would have seen “The Cabin in the Woods” because of all the good reviews I’ve read. Unfortunately, I missed in theaters, but a few of my co-workers from DISH were able to catch this movie on the big screen, and they really liked it. I decided to add this movie to my Blockbuster @home DVD queue. The shipping is fast, and once I’m done I can return it to the store for another movie in my queue. I have a long weekend coming up, and I can’t wait to see this movie.
