Hit-Girl #3

Hit-Girl #3

“Hit-Girl” is honestly the first time I haven’t been excited about a Mark Millar comic since his run on “Fantastic Four.” I wasn’t really thrilled by the concept of a Hit-Girl comic when it was announced, and this third issue is starting to show me why. Since it’s a story between stories, nothing can really happen to screw up the timeline. The threats against Mindy and her family just seem so pointless considering we see them alive in “Kick-Ass 2.” This comic just feels like a story about a baseball player during the off season. The whole thing is forced and ends up not being interesting. I really want to like this comic, but it isn’t what it should be. It should be a deeper exploration of Hit-Girl as a character, but just ends up being a filler story. Even the art feels rushed so Mark Millar doesn’t go too long on the shelves without a new comic. I would never define this comic as “bad,” but it just continues to grow as a disappointment. To prove my point I’m going to spoil the end of this issue for you. Hit-Girl screws up and lands in the den of a bunch of drug dealers. They all point they’re guns at Mindy and it looks like she’s totally screwed. Now if I had not already read “Kick-Ass 2” this might have felt suspenseful, but we all know she’s going to make it out of this okay. Unless Mark Millar is going for the time paradox, which I don’t think he is. Even he isn’t that clever.

Wolverine #313

Wolverine #313

This will be my last issue of “Wolverine” for a while. It’s fitting I suppose that this will be the last Wolverine solo story I read. I picked up Mr. Steel Claws years ago when Jeph Loeb wrote the story that killed off Sabretooth. Fast forward a hundred story lines later, and I leave Wolverine in a story that brings Sabretooth back to life. I know the backwards dynamic of this story process speaks loudly of the cheesy soap opera approach to character treatment, but screw it. Sometimes you just have to roll with it in order to have your fun. But the reason I’m leaving is because Marvel is doing a big revamp, and I’m trimming my hold list because of it. When DC did their big reboot, I picked out ten comics to keep my list in order. Now it’s Marvels turn. “Wolverine” earned its spot on the chopping block by changing writers and just going in a vague new direction that doesn’t seem very interesting. I’m sure some people will enjoy it, but it’s not for me.

As for this issue itself, it’s okay. It was really just a sequel that nobody wanted and everything just comes off feeling forced. Wolverine is just one of those characters that are more appealing when they’re on the offensive, and never really seems of interest when caught in a villain’s web. Also, is the villain Romulus secretly behind everything in Wolverine’s life? Still, the conclusion to this comic is nice even if we didn’t really ask for the story to begin with. Something decently written and brings the story I started with full circle. It even adds a redheaded chick who has more hair than clothes. I’m a little sad to kick Wolverine to the curb, but it’s better than reading about him fighting country rednecks.
