With Halloween quickly approaching, Melvin and I wanted to make something a little creepy for our food post this week. Melvin gets a bit queasy at the sight of blood, so I thought maybe some bloody cupcakes would be pretty horrific and fun to make. Add some edible broken glass, and it looks like we have a frightening recipe that’s easy to bake and perfect for scaring the trick-or-treaters!
I am by no means a baker, so I hope I don’t offend anyone with the simplicity of this recipe. I do use box cake mix for this, but by all means, if you want to make your cupcakes from scratch, please do! I also cheated and used already-made icing. I know, I know, icing is so super easy to make. I was just feeling a little lazy, what can I say? But anyway, feel free to make your own icing as well, or if you’re in a pinch, just grab a can from the store. So here is what you will need:
Broken Glass Cupcakes
- 1 box cake mix- I used Red Velvet Cake
- other ingredients needed for the box mix- for me it was water, vegetable oil and 3 eggs
- 1 can of icing
- 1 can cherry preserves
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 3/4 cup water
- cupcake pan
- baking cups
- rimmed baking sheet
Step 1: Follow the directions for the box cake mix. Pour the batter into your cupcake baking cups, bake at 350° for 18-20 minutes.
Step 2: Remove the cupcakes from the oven, let cool.
Step 3: Ok, now the fun part. I went to the Halloween master to find out how to make edible glass. Martha Stewart’s way is always the right way. Bring the sugar and water to a boil in a small high-sided saucepan, stirring, until the sugar dissolves. Reduce heat to medium-high, and cook until the mixture just starts to turn pale gold around the edges. Remove from heat and immediately pour onto a rimmed baking sheet. Tilt the sheet to spread the mixture to the edges so that it makes a very thin layer. Let cool to harden. I ended up sticking mine in the refrigerator to speed up the process a little.
Step 5: Twist your baking sheet with the edible glass to break it up and separate it from the sheet. Stick a few shards into the cupcake.
Step 6: Take your cherry preserves and drizzle them about the cupcake. Don’t be afraid to make it look like the blood is just oozing out of the cupcake’s wounds from the shards of glass.

You can’t celebrate Halloween without some creepy cute cupcakes!
