Uncanny Avengers #1
Another year, another Avengers comic. This time its writer Rick Remender’s turn at bat as Captain America forms a Mutant Avenger team to lessen the fallout from AvX. I will say that the comic opens rather strong with everyone trying to deal with the death of Chuck X. I will also say that this comic probably has the greatest amount of brain tissue shown in any comic this year. While I felt everything was well written with strong characters and the like, the super villain plot gets a little B-movieish. Coming off his intense run on “Uncanny X-force,” Remender’s opening for “Uncanny Avengers” just seems pretty tame by comparison. Though it’s a minor gripe that is pale in comparison to what could have been wrong with it. I walked away from “Uncanny Avengers” feeling that it has a lot of potential, and that I picked up the comic in the first place because I have a great deal of faith in Remender’s writing skills. But I also felt that it might take a few issues to really pull me in. Issue one isn’t the gateway drug it should have been, but all I have to do is reread “Uncanny X-force” to remind myself why I picked up this comic in the first place.
Batman #13
You know how to open a Joker storyline? Give birth to a two-headed lion. The Joker comes back to Gotham after a long absence and to signal his return a number of omens appear as if it’s the last days of Pompeii. It’s a very creepy and intense opening for this new Joker storyline even by Scott Snyder’s standards. The Joker was always crazy, but Snyder’s re-launched version paints him as a force of pure evil. In the past we could always count on a certain paint-by-numbers story with the Joker as he toys with Batman and the audience. But what Snyder does here perfectly is letting us know that the rules have changed. Mr. J has changed for the worse and the entire city of Gotham will feel it. I thought Snyder couldn’t top himself after the whole “Court of Owls” storyline, but it looks like I was wrong. My only concern is how the story will tie into the other Gotham comics. Will the tie-ins add to the story, or will it just be needless padding in an attempt to sell more comics? Either way, Scott Snyder’s portion of the story is awesome.
On a side note, the cover comes with a cardboard Joker mask. Rumor mill says the aftermarket price has already skyrocketed. If you want to buy my mint first edition copy… tough.
Also, in a shameless plug to myself, check out Bruce Osborne on Facebook. I post/link all my stuff there, including chapters on a book I’m working on. Feel free to hit the ‘Like’ button as if you’re an addict.
I also write publish works of fiction on my Bruce Osborne Blog. Feel free to read, follow, or even hate my stuff. I don’t care if people like it, only that they read it.
There are too many movies for me to review in full, so I created a twitter account to give brief opinions on the many movies I view. If you wish to read my smart ass remarks, follow M.O.V.I.E. Reviewer @MutantOpossum.
