With the rush of the holiday season and all of that cooking over Thanksgiving, Melvin and I needed a little break. What could we make that was simple yet awesomely geeky?
Melvin and I talked about how much we used to love pigs in a blanket, you know, hot dogs wrapped up in crescent rolls. So we got the idea to class it up a little by turning them into Portal turrets! This recipe is so quick and simple, you can make it anytime for a quick snack, or a fun lunch!
For our delicious Portal turrets in a blanket, here’s what you will need:
- hot dogs
- ready made pie crust
- sriracha or ketchup or any sort of red sauce
- black food coloring
Step 1: Slice a hot dog in half, horizontally. These two pieces will become the bodies for two turrets.
Step 2: Wrap pie crust around the hot dog to form the case of the turret.
Step 3: Cut two long and thin rectangular shapes out of the pie crust. These will be the legs for the turret. Wet one end of a leg with a small amount of water so that it will stick to the body of the turret.
Step 4: Place on a baking sheet and bake in the oven at 375° for about 20 minutes.
Step 5: Take your turrets out and give them a chance to cool.
Step 6: Place one red dot in the center of the turret body, of course I used sriracha for this.
Step 7: Drip a couple drops of black food coloring into a small bowl. Using a toothpick or small paintbrush, draw a line running down the center of the turret.
Step 8: Enjoy! Don’t worry, the turret doesn’t blame you for enjoying it’s deliciousness. Oh! And if you’re not a fan of hot dogs, you can fill these little pie crust-y turrets with any sort of filling you would like! Veggies and cheese, hamburger, whatever you like!
The cake may be a lie, but these awesome items are not!
