Mobile Game Reviews

7 May

Welcome dwellers,  to Mobile Game Reviews!

In lieu of the regular game reviews (as we are currently still looking for a steady writer) I’ll be reviewing the up-and-coming games from the android market. I’ll also do my research for the iGEEKS and links to the Amazon app store if possible.

On the first installment of mobile game reviews we’ll take a look at a well known web sensation. It was his/her/its first year anniversary recently.

Nyan Cat Jump!

Nyan cat game screenshot

Well first,  either mute the media on your phone, or turn it down just enough to annoy those around you, because a nyan cat game is nothing without the soundtrack except less annoying.

Then, ask yourself if you like doodle jump or not. If not, don’t bother, its pretty much a way more spectacular, LSD reminiscent, skin. On the subject of skins you can choose a theme for your nyan feline, and backgrounds as well.

The special power ups are more colorful and random, while featuring the same aspects of the doodle jump we’ve come to love (but refuse to pay for.)
If you’re looking for a free jump! game this is a great replacement.

I loved it so much, I cranked the volume and attempted high score after high score. How I could NOT play a Wolverine Nyan Cat? Seriously.

Nyan Cat-Lost in Space

I’m not normally a fan of the simple sideways scrolling games. But,  as I just learned,  that special ranbow-poptart-cat can change minds.

Simple controls, tap to jump and tap again to jump again. But the Technicolor super powers are worth grabbing and the alien UFO’s are worth avoiding.  Skins are also incorporated into this game as well, just not as many. Overall its more of a “Hey look!  A Nyan Cat game!“ or *entertains two year old with smart phone* type of time-passer. Though beware: once sucked in its hard to escape.

That’s how I ended up playing it for an hour while my spouse talked to his brother about cars. It is a great time passer, probably the best if there is a best of such. I’ll be keeping it on the top of my game folder. It is a great game to show off the colors on newer phones and give someone a good ol’ aneurism if you leave the audio on.

The Gates of Hell Have Opened!

23 Apr

….And they are actually about to close just as quickly as they opened.  I wrote this a meager 5 hours after Blizzard opened it’s servers to the mass public, consider this a ‘ first impressions and beta review’

I have two men in my living room playing the Diablo beta. Both of them true players and fans of the game they are loading. I’m currently writing this on my phone because I loaned the use of my lap to my better half’s brother, that’s right, good deed of the year.

Diablo 3 has been on their mind for 12 years, they played Diablo two during Christmas non-stop because gifts of #3 pre-orders was too much to handle.

Loading two computers with a buggy beta version of one of the most anticipated games of the century took a while for sure.  Once done, they hoped on, worked out a few bugs, and started the descent into  Hell.

During the first mission its apparent that the graphics could be more awesome. The buildings and scenery may not be as crazy as Skyrim,  but the point here is looting corpses and killing baddie hoards, not smelling the roses or breathtaking mountains.  If you played the previous games you’ll be satisfied with the look and feel of this one. You may also notice that the environment is a bit more interactive and is, of course, more of a 3-D purgatory than it’s older versions.

When it comes to game play, our faster computer did fine, and it even played tolerably on my slower laptop.  Only a few blips of lag here and there, but its to be expected in a beta, or while sharing an internet connection.

There are baddies you will remember and some new creeps crawling around trying to deal damage. The old familiar npc, Deckard Kane, is seen during beta as well.

Looting and combat work in pretty much the same way. Random clicking! But seriously, there are more realistic hot keys for combat and healing: making game play easier and more fluent(instead of constantly refilling inventory slots with much-needed potions.)

Overall the reports from the boys was a good one. I even Had a great time watching!  For waiting as long as they did for this game, I can’t believe anything would meet their standards, this did. It was kick ass enough for them to play it two times over to go for all the loot, skills, and levels that they could inside the demo.

We would hope you got to play the beta and if you liked it, we recommend getting Diablo III. It’s a steep $60 for the standard version and $100 for the collectors edition. We consider it totally worth it and you have till 10 am today to play it!

Happy gaming!  And Get in quickly to Try it out,Info here!

Did you play the beta? Tell us what you thought in the comments!

The Basement Still Exists!

20 Oct

No, We haven’t Fallen into oblivion, or been eaten by the Walking Dead, but We have become a bit scattered within our own lives. As stated in yesterday’s giveaway post, WE ARE STILL HERE and We WILL be back SOON!

For those of you still keeping up on Mom’s Basement A few things are happening to the staff behind the scenes that don’t really allow for the awesome up-keep if the site that we are all so used to.

Our Fearless Leader, Holly, has re-positioned to a more southern state. Given that Moving entails transferring employment, then getting that well deserved pay check, Internet has not come to bestow its greatness to the CustomComix Relm. * It will be arriving shortly however!

As for our Site Designer/Co-Editor, Kimmie, She is also Migrating. A Grand journey across The Rockies and The Cascades to the  Emerald City of Seattle has left her with only the option to access the holiness of the Interwebz via her Android. *The Droid luckily offers an awesome little WordPress App used to make sure The Basement hasn’t Imploded

We want to thank our readers and writers for hangin on with us through this, and we would like to let our donors and viewers know that this is only a small bump in the road. Giveaways will once again Return, as will the daily segments featured on the side bar of the page. (—-> over there!)

So, All in all, We hope you will all be here when we descend those downward stairs and reclaim the infamous subterranean under-structure with Melvin. We’re sure he’s a bit lonely down there, but he does have his Xbox.

“Bomb-Omb Keychain” Giveaway WINNER!

19 Oct

CONGRATULATIONS “enlightenup23“ you are the giveaway winner! Please send your contact information to MelvinsBasement@gmail.com!

Our Giveaways are currently going on a break until our two head editors finish moving to new locations. (1-2 weeks) Please remain calm, they WILL be back as soon as we have internet and availability again. If you donated something, please hang tight as it will soon be up for giveaway and promotions. Thank you all for seeing us through this troubling time!

Changing Gears…..[Re-defining Geek]

11 Sep

Sundays are usually for Top Ten lists, however outside of the basement I have a little hobby. I like Cars, so shoot me. Don’t Get me wrong, I’m a geek first, racer second.  This week was all about my current project, a little 4 cyninder import car. Now, I know most people arent into cars, so I’ll hold myself back from deep details, but I want to show off a little and give you a view of my life when I leave the basement. I even Geeked out The last two “Episodes” because I couldnt keep the geek hidden. So I bring to you:

Episode III: Intergalactic Lead Foot, Darth K.

I Raced for the first time in Three years. Here is a short video of myself, Kimmie, driving our precious project down the track. Our Car is the Black HatchBack. Thank for watching, and Please like/comment!

The biggest geeks I’ve seen are car freaks, what other kind of people would make body kits themed after Darth Vader? What other kind of people would turn their car into a computer accessory to tune the fuel/air settings? What other kind of people would take extra care and research to be sure their vehicle has proper wind breaking? What other kind of people would strap a bottle of Nitros Oxcide in their car for extra Fast as Furious boosting?

These kind of people rock my socks. Its only been a few years since I’ve gotten into building and fixing cars and its been a head trip to say the least. The boys of the trade are always throwing around engine codes, air/fuel ratio’s, pipe diamiters, tire pressure suggestions, and race and reaction times. It’s really quite geeky.

My spouse and I purchased an engine from Japan. We shoved many performance parts under the hood. We took it to the Quarter Mile Drags.  We hoped for a 1/4 mile time of 13.99 seconds. Got close enough to go back out next week with improvements.girl drag racer

We don’t use Forced Induction, yet.

I had a Good Weekend, hope you did too!
