Melvin Goes to Comicpalooza!!

13 Jun

Two weeks ago Melvin,Charlie Brazen, our friend Danielle and Myself set forth on a journey through time and space and ended up on a strange planet filled with Super Heroes, Monsters and Baddies, better known as Comicpalooza.

My small business Custom Comix had a booth at this particular convention, so not only was I there on business, but it was a great excuse to go out and give Moms Basement a workout. I don’t think I could through one conversation without them asking about Melvin. He was popping out of my badge holder the entire weekend, and he was quite popular. I’m pretty sure I got cut off mid sentence a few times by “So what’s his story?” or “Who is this guy?”.

Melvin even got to rub elbows with a few celebrities! Whattt! So click through the jump to check out all of Melvin’s new friends, and the stories that go with them– Enjoy!

WARNING: Melvin is definitely a ladies man, which is probably why most the the men that crossed Melvin’s path tried to exterminate him. I assure you that no Melvins were harmed (badly) for the enjoyment of Moms Basement.

Did Somebody Say Pie?

Happy Pi Day!!!– From all of us here at Moms Basement!

What in the world is Pi day, and why the hell does it sound so delicious?! Well, I think it’s best to let the fine owners of Piday.org (and the ones most excited about this infinite holiday) tell you all about it…

Pi, Greek letter (π), is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Pi Day is celebrated by math enthusiasts around the world on March 14th. Pi = 3.1415926535…

With the use of computers, Pi has been calculated to over 1 trillion digits past the decimal. Pi is an irrational and transcendental number meaning it will continue infinitely without repeating. The symbol for pi was first used in 1706 by William Jones, but was popular after it was adopted by the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler in 1737.

I hope all of our readers are lucky enough to celebrate with infinite pie on this mathematical day made just for us geeks!

Don’t be caught off guard next year! Get prepared with these handmade Pi Day inspired pieces!

Virtually Plank-tastic

This past weekend I took a trip over to Duck Creek in Utah. We rented a cabin and *roughed* it out in the wilderness. There was a TV in every room, even the bathroom, but my android was on roaming the whole time! I KNOW! It was horrible!

While enjoying the great outdoors my brother and I decided it would be a great idea to have him plank every flat surface on the property and beyond. Yes, even the hammock was planked. ( Believe me, it can be done) Every stump in that yard was “planked” and we even have a video library of the planks and the erhm- worried – erhm big sister screaming ” Stop being a WUSS! PLANK IT!!!!!”

Little Brother planking the cabin

I am not even going to take the time to explain what planking is in words. You need to get out from under that rock you have been living under, and plank that damn thing! Plus, I think the pictures will leave you just as confused and feeling a little unfulfilled, its all the same really.

What I am getting at is, Planking is a pretty pointless concept, and I think it’s just outright dumb. Unless… You bring it to the Virtual world. Then, it’s just hilarious. Enjoy this collection of in game planking. ( I know you are going to go log into your WoW account and Plank your local Goldshire tavern, don’t think I’m not onto you..)

How to Make Your Listings Picture Perfect.. on a Budget!

19 Aug

I have been asked to cover some of the aspects of being a successful seller on Etsy.com.  Since we are a geeky crafters site, and I am a seller, I thought I would take a stab at what I think are some of the most important things to learn in order for your shop to even have a fighting chance.

The first thing that came to mind is actually the first thing that draws customers into your shop.First impressions are everything, and the quality of your photos is key. Believe it or not, having dark fuzzy pictures will make people look past your shop without even blinking an eye. You could basically have a picture of Elvis holding the Holy Grail in 2011 and if the quality is bland and dark, people wouldn’t even think twice. Yes, its that important! This article is here to prove that you can be on a budget and still take amazing photos of your work!

I purchased The Handmade Marketplace and How to Make Money Using Etsy, a while back, basically to see if I was doing it right, and to see if there were any secrets that were withheld from me. They both screamed out to me ” HOLLY! FIX YER DAMN PHOTOS!”  Basically, both books had chapters laying it on thick emphasizing how  important it is to have quality photos. If the pros are trying to drill it into our brains, maybe there is something to this picture thing..

Now, bare with me, I’m going to reference my World of Warcraft playing Dad on this next part. (If you’ve played Wow, or have any obsessed friends, you may know what I’m talking about.) Back in the day, my Dad rolled up on a group of people running a Raid. He was there, ready to kick some ass, and super excited. The other guys took one look at the gear he was wearing and basically laughed him out of the Raid. ( He even had his riding crop equipped.. yikes!) Well, he went and grinded the hell out of the PvP badges and was one of the first players on his server to get a full set of PvP gear. ( Back then, that was the shit. ) Let’s just say those guys were more or less BEGGING my dad to join in on the reindeer games. — What am I getting at?

Nice Beaver Belt, Mage..

When I started Etsy, I didn’t really know much about photography. I did notice right off the bat that people had PROFESSIONAL looking photos of their items. I had NO idea how they achieved that sort of look. I was super confident in my pieces, so I wasn’t too worried about it. I set up my shop, took pictures of my wares with my CAMERA PHONE, beautiful! I was so proud. I waltz’ed on into the Etsy Chatroom and showed off my shop like it was a cure for the common cold. Within seconds I was getting whispers and e-mails offering their photo editing services for a hefty fee. People were critiquing and pretty much laughing at my store. I was MORTIFIED! I then, felt like my Dad. I had a fire in my belly. Time to prove to people that this Noob was not one to mess with.
