Tuesday’s Treasury-True Blood

19 Jun

Vampires have been a huge part of my life since I can remember. Even before I was able to watch horror movies as a child (it’s hard to remember such a time) I would watch Nosferatu and Dracula. Since then Vampires have become somewhat mainstream, and we have much more PG versions of the previous night stalkers (thanks, Stephanie Meyer). HBO has fixed that by taking the steamy Southern  Vampire book series, and making it into the nudity and blood filled wonder that is True Blood. Unlike those sparkly fellows, these Vampires are true to the old stereotypes. With a few added touches like retractable fangs, and synthetic bottled blood, this show does not disappoint us die-hard Vamp fans.

Even Melvin has gotten in on the action!

Everyone has their favorite when it comes to True Blood. The battle between Eric and Bill is the typical, then you have their ‘children’, Pam and Jessica. Personally, I have never been able to make a choice and stick with it. I love all characters equally, except for Lafayette of course. For a character that was not a huge part of the books, to be made into the beautiful sassy man that graces the screen so often with his fabulous antics, was pure genius. Also I may have lied about the Bill and Eric battle, I choose Eric without a doubt. From the first time I saw his long blond hair and leather pants, it was a done deal. I imagine I sound a lot like a fan girl at this point, and I have no arguments for this. This show came at a time the world was desperate for some real Vampire action, and they have yet to disappoint.

I say this often, but this truly was an incredibly fun treasury to make. I have now made a wish list for the next several holidays, or years. I have no doubt fellow Truebies, or Fangbangers will appreciate this treasury as much as I do. Season five has kickedoff in style, and there’s no reason you shouldn’t watch in style! Check out this awesome treasury, and enjoy the handmade goodies.

Sink your fangs into this (True) blood filled treasury!

Treasury Tuesday- 8 Bit!

12 Jun

With E3 coming to a close, we’re left with just the screen shots and demos of many upcoming beautiful games. Games so awesome in fact, I can’t help but think of how much graphics have progressed over the years. Hell, even recently. The gaming world is making such huge advances, it’s mind blowing to even the biggest nerd. While I love epic graphics as much as the next gamer, even the ones that tend to make my desktop implode, I do enjoy a nice stroll down memory lane. At the very end of that nostalgic road, is our friend 8bit graphics.

Sure the 8bit hearts and bows have taken the geek world by storm lately, but what about everything else?
Minecraft takes us back to days where guns weren’t scarily accurate, and realistic looking monsters didn’t pop out to give you heart attacks at random points during the game. (Though I won’t downplay the horror that is a Creeper.) For a while 8 and 16 bit graphics were a sign of the past, and while they’ve always stayed in the hearts of life-long gamers, they became outdated. Even the classics were redone and revamped to mirror the graphics of the latest games.

Now it seems we’ve all reached a happy medium between them both. We have our PS3’s set up next to our old Nintendo’s. NES controllers are just as recognizable as Xbox 360′s are. It’s an age where all things are appreciated. Old graphics aren’t a sign that you aren’t up to date, it’s a sign that you still have a love for something that started it all. With the risk of this article making me sound much older than I actually am, I have to say I am in awe of what’s up and coming in the gaming world. Sometimes it’s nice to take a step back, blow on a cartridge or two, and re-live a much simpler gaming experience. As usual, my geeky rant is to be followed with an awesome treasury filled with items relating to it all!

Take a look at these awesome pixelated items.

Treasury Tuesday- The Guild!

5 Jun

guildI haven’t been this obsessed with something since the Harry Potter books came out. (lol I’m still obsessed with them.) The Guild had me hooked with the first episode many years ago. Since then it’s grown from small webisodes to 5 full seasons, tons of merch, comic books, and more! With the release of Fawkes one-shot comic book, (revealing the back story of our favorite douchey villain, played by Wil Wheaton) I figured why not pay tribute to out nerdy leaders?

codexFelicia Day is a Goddess among geeks. She’s everything that’s right with female gamers, in a huge sea of wrong. She represents us exactly how she should. She’s cute, quirky, and talented. Who could ask for more? She’s contributed so much to our geeky kingdom, I’m not sure what it would be like without her. #girlcrush.

The cast of The Guild is so different and unique, yet everyone can relate to them in some way. Whether you’re a bit neurotic like Codex, frugal as hell like Vork, maybe you have mommy issues only Zaboo would understand. Perhaps you just like watching Wil Wheaton be amazing, and who can blame you? The point is, there’s something for everyone here. I cannot express my love for this show enough, and apparently neither can the good people of Etsy. This treasury is small, but meaningful. Us geeks tend to like stuff that’s sometimes not so mainstream. So it’s put in the capable hands of crafters on Etsy to help us express this, and as usual we aren’t let down.

Treasury Tuesday- Get your geek on!

22 May

pride

My goodness, what a big week we have ahead of us! Friday, May 25th is a day with so many geeky happenings, I barely know where to start. Firstly we have Wear the Lilac day, for all of you Terry Pratchett (Discworld) buffs out there. Secondly is Towel Day, a tribute to the late great Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy).starwars Next we have the 35th anniversary of the geeky cornerstone, Star Wars! Then to bring it all together we have Geek Pride Day! It’s as if the fate’s align to bring us all together. -tear-

Whether you’re a Discworld fan, a Hitchiker’s junkie, a Star Wars nerd, or just an all around geek this week is something special. Of course Christmas and Halloween are our traditional staples, but what about our geek-made holidays? These don’t stem from religion or ceremonies. They don’t date back hundreds years, but that just makes them special in their own right. It adds a new meaning to them, being created and celebrated by fans. pratchettBy making our own holidays we create our own traditions, and how wonderful it is to be part of a community that’s capable of such things. I’d love to go into each and every reason why we do what we do, but if you’re on Mom’s Basement reading this, I have a feeling you already know. There are fan-made days all throughout the year, but it’s rare we have a day filled with so many! It’s truly something to celebrate, and I can’t wait to do so.

adamsWith this being such a special weekend, I wanted to make sure Treasury Tuesday reflected that. To help this happen I have a little trick up my sleeve. The Avenger’s themed party went so well, guess who’s teaming up again this week to bring you a little more awesome? That’s right folks, Michelle, of Foodie Friday  has agreed to team up and once again bring you some amazing recipes to go with this week’s geek party theme! No spoilers here, though. You’ll have to stay tuned until Friday and see for yourself! Until then, browse through this awesome treasury, and get to work planning your pride party! I know I am.

Check out these awesome handmade items, and let your geek flag fly!

Treasury Tuesday-Wizard of Oz

15 May

oz

While watching my newest tv show obsession: Syfy’s Hollywood Treasure; which follows a crew of auctioneer as they seek out pop culture items and props, they came across the original hat from the Wicked Witch of the West. I haven’t seen The Wizard of Oz in years, though I went through an obsession as most of us have. I was re-introduced to that obsession in a way, once I had that child like excitement return while seeing the original hat. hatNot to mention the actual courage medal given to the Cowardly Lion, and a meeting with the actual lollipop kid! While I know I’ll never get my hands on treasures like those, that doesn’t mean there aren’t one of a kind items just as awesome as those, that aren’t quite as difficult to come by. So I set out on the yellow brick road leading straight to Etsy to discover the wonders held within, and that is exactly how this treasury came to be!

I remember when my boyfriend first revealed out relationship to his family, his mother said she had but one question to ask me, and it was a very important question. After weeks of fretting over what it could possibly be, it turned out to be “Are you a good witch, or a bad witch?”. Not only did I feel super relieved that she wasn’t going to base her approval on my solution to world peace, I was excited that this was obviously the beginning of a beautiful friendship. After all, you can tell a lot about a person by the movies and music they reference. In my experience if someone quotes The Wizard of Oz to you, it’s immediately a good sign. So far my theory has not let me down, and I don’t imagine it ever will.

picSome may think it’s outdated, and let me tell you, just because something is quoted for decades does not mean it’s charm fades. I know first hand how easy it is to dismiss something once it becomes over-exposed, but Wizard of Oz is one of the few exceptions. When you can watch something 20 years or more after your first viewing, and still have every bit of excitement come flooding back, it deserves every bit of exposure. The genius that is The Wizard of Oz has yet to be matched. IT was revolutionary in its time, and it still remains just as awe-inspiring as before. I am excited to bring you this wonderful treasury, filled with handmade items I would love to have in my possession. Every last magical piece!

Treasury Tuesday-The Sims

8 May

sims

Hello there, or Hooba noobie! Don’t worry, just because this weeks treasury is all about The Sims, I won’t be writing this article in Simlish. Though, I’ll admit I was tempted. I have been playing The Sims for several years now. From the days it was but a pixellated mess of customized bedrooms, smoke detectors, and crying babies, to the ‘everything is scarcely close to real life Sims we have become accustomed to. I remember the first time I got my hands on a copy of The Sims Deluxe Edition  for PC. After hours of entering in serial codes, swapping dvd-roms out, and loading screens I just couldn’t wait to create my own happy family! Those plans quickly faded and turned more into how many ways can I torture, and eventually kill this poor unknowing family?

sims2From building fences around helpless neighbors, to viciously removing the latter from the swimming pools, the game took on a life of its own. I’ll never forget the first time the entire household met its demise in an ‘accidental’ fire. (I mean, who expects a small room filled with furry rugs to just burst into flames after the lighting of one, or five fireplaces simultaneously?) After that I decided to play the game more legit. Spending more time customizing the houses than the characters. My Harry Potter/Hogwarts mansion is still one of my greatest Sims achievements to date, complete with floo powder fireplaces, and all four common rooms fully pimped out in the house colors and crests. Then came The Sims 2! With babies having more than one stage of life, the ability to zoom the camera straight into the action, and tons of countless other features and improvements. Oh the days I’ve wasted on that game.sims3

Now, The Sims 3 is something I’ve only dabbled in, since my many other hobbies and interests seem to have taken over these past few years. From what I’ve seen it’s amazing, yet unnecessarily realistic. The one character I’ve played through was an aspiring superstar, talk about a stray from real life, and I spent most of my time talking, and walking to random downtown destinations. It was insanely fun, but I can’t help but miss the simplicity of the original games. They will always hold a special place in my geeky heart. That being said, Sims Medieval, and Pirates and Nobles are looking to be rapidly approaching that small gaming section of my heart. They seem to be an awesome new twist on the play style, and are so incredibly relevant to my interests. It seems as if The Sims have grown up with me, the characters and the game development, and I will always have fond memories and hilarious stories related to them.

Close out of all other actions, and check out this Sims inspired treasury instead!
