Melvin’s Geek Song of the Week 10-15-12

My roommate just went back to school, which means he won’t get to read for pleasure for a couple of years.  To taunt him further, this week’s song is based on a popular comic book that was turned into a movie.

The Artist:  Aimee Mann is an American folk/rock singer-songwriter.  Her career has been a mix of solo work and performing with others, but she’s noteworthy for being a successful independent artist.  Though she is strongly opposed to music piracy, she doesn’t like record labels because they take ownership of creative works away from the artist.  Bonus geek cred:  Mann was in an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Melvin’s Geek Song of the Week 10-9-12

Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canadians!  I am thankful for our wonderful world, with its pretty flowers, gloriously tall trees, tranquil lakes, its cute little beasties, and all the special things nature has to offer.  These are splendors I hope are shared by generations to come, and that is the theme of this week’s song.

The Song: “Our Biggest Challenge” by Symphony of Science

The Artist:  Symphony of Science is an incredible collection of music and videos made by combining stunning visuals with autotuned speeches by some of the world’s greatest science innovators and educators.  To quote the official website and its creator, “Hey – I’m John Boswell, the musician and producer behind the Symphony of Science. The goal of the project is to bring scientific knowledge and philosophy to the public, in a novel way, through the medium of music. Science and music are two passions of mine that I aim to combine, in a way that is intended to bring a meaningful message to listeners, while simultaneously providing an enjoyable musical experience.”

Melvin’s Geek Song of the Week 10-1-12

I know it’s Monday morning and it’s a cruel time to be doing such a thing, but how many science/math/history references can you spot in today’s song?

The Artist:  Jetplane Landing is a band with memebers from Northern Ireland and England that was formed in 1999. They refer to their musical style as funk/punk/soul.  Despite being a fairly new group, they’ve already recorded three studio albums (and are working on a fourth!) and have done quite a bit of touring throughout the UK.  The band seems to love squeezing unusual/obscure histroical references into their music.

Melvin’s Geek Song of the Week 9-24-12

Today’s song of the day answers a very important question: where’s Captain Kirk?

The Artist:  R.E.M. is an American rock band formed in the early 80s.  Though they performed on Late Night with David Letterman in 1983, they didn’t enjoy mainstream success until the late 80s.  The group was pivotal in the transition from post punk to alternative rock.  In addition to making great music, the group was also socially and politcally active, fighting for human rights and raising awareness of environmental issues (among other things).

Spizzenergi was an English punk group from the late 70s, and you can hear them performing this week’s song here!

Melvin’s Geek Song of the Week 9-17-12

Nobody knows what the future will bring, except maybe the Doctor.  But the rest of us are stuck with nothing but speculation, and hopefully spaceships.

The Song: “This Time Tomorrow” by The Kinks

The Lyrics:

This time tomorrow, where will we be?
On a spaceship somewhere, sailing across an empty sea

Will we still be here watching an in-flight movie show?

The Artist:  The Kinks were an English rock band formed in 1964 that enjoyed great popularity in the US.  Their music was highly influential, and has been covered by many well-known groups such as Van Halen, the Jam, the Knack and the Pretenders.  The band continued to write and perform until 1996, though the group’s members changed frequently.  There is talk of a potential The Kinks reunion, and hopefully the band will keep on playing until we do have badass spaceships flying through the sky!

Melvin’s Geek Song of the Week 10-9-12

Let’s start off yet another miserable Monday with a catchy tune about life’s most important and complex science!

The Song: “Chemistry” by Semisonic

The Artist:  Semisonic is an American rock band from Minnesota.   This week’s song was quite popular overseas, but never really caught on with local audiences.  Though their 2001 album All About Chemistry is their most recent studio album, the group is still together, and still performs around Minneapolis.  They are intending to release future albums, so show them some love to help make their intention a reality!   I know I like clever songs that pretend to be about science but really aren’t!  ;)
