Tuesday’s Treasury: Bizarre and Awesome

4 Jun

I was looking through my favorites list on Etsy recently and thought, “Wow, I’ve favorited a lot of weird things.” I’ve always been a lover of strange things, and I think it’s great that places like Etsy exist so sellers can share their strange creations with like-minded people.

I’ve created a treasury of some awesome oddities from my favorites list, perfect for the discerning weirdo…

Both my husband and father love astronomy and astrophysics. I enjoy space-related things too, but I’ve sat through many an episode of The Universe where I thought my head would explode trying to understand String Theory and quantum mechanics. If you also have a space-lover in your life, or happen to be one, check out the treasury below for out of this world handmade awesomeness.

Tuesday’s Treasury: Dig it!

14 May

Mining games seem to be all the rage right now. Everyone knows and loves Minecraft, but there are other equally awesome but lesser known mining/crafting games out there too, such as Terraria, Miner Dig Deep!, Total Miner, and probably others that I haven’t played. These games are absurdly addictive, whether your obsession is building a bigger and better castle, slaughtering zombies or searching for those elusive diamonds.

In today’s treasury, get ready to leave your colorful, pixellated overworld, craft yourself some awesome tools, and dig deep! But watch out, zombies and other enemies are lurking below the surface. If you survive, you may just find the treasure you’re looking for…

DIY

3 Apr

Working on my own brand of art keeps me busy, but sometime I like to try creating something out of my norm. Tutorials, kits, and patterns are a great way to explore new crafting mediums. Click on the photos below to access the projects and get busy with your own DIY activity.

I love instructables.com – the site is filled with tutorials, printables, and recipes for everything you can imagine. And they’re free!

I’m currently collecting the materials to make this gorgeous tree branch lamp. My mom made a table similar to the stacked branch lamp years ago. I love the rustic look and like the variety of styles shown. It also looks fairly simple to construct.

I know I’m behind in the internet culture because I only recently learned what “Gangnam Style” is. However, my husband plays the song so much now that I’ve become quite familiar with it. I would love to create the PSY paper machine shown below for my husband. It looks like it would take some time to create, but the fact that the little PSY dances would totally make it worth the time and effort.

The project below only takes a couple of items and little time, but is sure to organize any booknerd’s living space. I know I need these for the stacks of books on my floor.

Book Art

20 Mar

Before  I made a living creating art, writing was my life. I went to college for a writing degree and worked on a novel in my free time. Life has a funny way of changing directions on you, though, and I now find myself sans a degree and selling my jewelry and art as my day job instead of novels like I thought I would. I love my life the way it is, but the one thing I regret is never finishing my novel. I’m rather embarrassed that I’ve been working on it for 15 years and it’s not at the point I want it to be. I’ve finished many drafts of it, but never found it perfect enough. I’ve had these characters in my head for so long, and I feel like I need to tell their story, so I’ve been trying to set aside some time every night to write a few pages.

If I ever do get my novel published (and it’s so easy to do self-publishing and promotion these days), I’d love some artwork to go with it. I’m considering starting some portraits of the characters or paintings of the landscapes. This got me thinking about art in books. There are times when it is needed – giving the reader a better picture of what is being described. And there are times that the subject is simply so interesting or beautiful that it deserves to be seen.

I browsed my usual sources of awesome art and found some amazing pieces from original books and stories, as well as unique depictions of classic literature.

For the Kids

13 Mar

My son loves video games and geeky things and for Christmas he asked Santa for a gyroid from Animal Crossing. That’s not something you can pick up at WalMart. I ended up crocheting him one and he loves it. But not everyone can create obscure (and awesome) geeky toys for their kids. That’s why I love places like Etsy and Deviantart. They connect you directly with artists that are offering unique things you’re looking for or can custom make it for you.

If your kid is a geek-in-training, this gallery is sure to provide you with awesome creations they approve of. Many of these you’ll be tempted to buy for yourselves!
