In case you’ve been sitting the basement for too long and haven’t noticed – it’s almost spring! I hate winter and can’t wait to start planting flowers and enjoying the outdoors. Not all of us have the luxury of large yards or gardens, but you can still perk up the outside of your house or apartment after a dreary winter with some beautiful art. I’m not a big fan of pink flamingos, masses of windchimes, and lawn gnomes littering one’s yard, but a few choice pieces of geeky outdoor art will let the neighbors know how awesome you are.
Go Bold
30 JanYou can tell by my hair that I don’t like to be subtle in my appearance. This sometimes applies to the jewelry I wear as well. I like all kinds of jewelry, but occasionally, I want something that makes a statement. Fortunately, if you feel the same way, there are many artists out there that create such pieces. Prepare to be noticed!

The Finer Things
14 NovI love jewelry. I love bold, fun jewelry, understated, pretty pieces, and everything in between. There is a lot of geeky jewelry on Etsy, and much of it is of the fun and quirky variety, many of my own creations included. But sometimes I want to wear fine jewelry – something elegant that will stand the test of time. Luckily, there are artists on Etsy that have combined geekiness and fine jewelry, so you never have to choose between the two.
If you’re fond of dragons and fantasy, this ring should make you happy. It was created with a glass taxidermy eye and argentium silver.
Jewelsvine is one of my favorite shops. I have purchased from them in the past and still love my necklace. It was hard to choose just one item to feature, but I love this test tube necklace! Be sure to check out their shop for other awesomeness, like rocket lockets, skulls, robot kitties, and steampunk instruments.
I own a skull necklace from MichelleChangJewelry as well. She makes simple, elegant jewelry featuring skulls, foxes, hedgehogs, octopi and more.
If you’re a gamer, MB’s own SketchyStories has some awesome jewelry for you, including this jumping Mario pendant, as well as a D-pad necklace, Link, and Minecraft pickaxe!

Blood Lust
24 OctVampires are sexy. And I’m not talking about the sparkly, teenage variety. They’re sophisticated, charismatic, and like to nibble on your neck. They invoke a combination of fear and attraction for many people. After all, who wouldn’t want to have supernatural powers, live for centuries, and dress snappy?
Vampires as we know them have been around since the early 1800s, but creatures that feed on blood or flesh have been in the world’s cultural conscience for much longer. Bram Stoker’s Dracula was highly influential on our idea of vampires today and was inspired by the cruel Transylvanian conqueror, Vlad the Impaler.
I think vampires are some of the cooler horror monsters, and I’ve found some amazing art dedicated to them, and also to eradicating them!
And who could forget Brad Pitt as the reluctant blood sucker from Interview with a Vampire?

Fantastic Sculpture
26 SepSculpture has been around since prehistoric times and can be made from practically any material. I love paintings, but there is something about viewing (and creating) art in three dimensions that I truly love.
I’m used to sculpting tiny figures and jewelry charms, but have recently moved into creating larger scale sculptures. I’ve explored DeviantART and Etsy to see what my peers have made and I’m blown away by their work.
CreaturesFromEl creates fantastical creatures with so much beautiful filigree and detail that it astounds me. I had a very hard time choosing a sculpture from her DeviantART gallery because I love them all. She has amazingly delicate dragons, wolves, birds, and even a Cheshire cat. She also has an Etsy shop where you can make one of these works of art your own.
I would like to have the skill to sculpt human figures someday, like the gorgeous fairy below. Not only do the form and features look realistic, but so do the wings and hair. And the little bits of dirt on her side and shoulder are a nice touch, as if she really were hunting. What do fairies hunt anyway?

Unusual Mediums
18 JulOils, marble, porcelain… Tried and true materials that have been around for centuries. The results are gorgeous, but maybe a little predictable. My topic this week is on materials and art that mix it up and make you go, “that’s made out of what?” Check out these conversation starters!
This necklace is super cute, but I bet if it weren’t for the caption you’d never guess it was made from a skateboard. Now you can keep your skater vibe with you, even in formal occasions.
Everyone needs a message board, but about the last place I’d think to write, “We went to the store,” is on a faux human skull. But not iamhome! They’ve been selling these skulls since late 2010 and now hundreds of people have unique (and morbid) message centers in their homes. Their skulls come in dozens of colors, including a realistic bone shade.
