DIY

Working on my own brand of art keeps me busy, but sometime I like to try creating something out of my norm. Tutorials, kits, and patterns are a great way to explore new crafting mediums. Click on the photos below to access the projects and get busy with your own DIY activity.

I love instructables.com – the site is filled with tutorials, printables, and recipes for everything you can imagine. And they’re free!

I’m currently collecting the materials to make this gorgeous tree branch lamp. My mom made a table similar to the stacked branch lamp years ago. I love the rustic look and like the variety of styles shown. It also looks fairly simple to construct.

I know I’m behind in the internet culture because I only recently learned what “Gangnam Style” is. However, my husband plays the song so much now that I’ve become quite familiar with it. I would love to create the PSY paper machine shown below for my husband. It looks like it would take some time to create, but the fact that the little PSY dances would totally make it worth the time and effort.

The project below only takes a couple of items and little time, but is sure to organize any booknerd’s living space. I know I need these for the stacks of books on my floor.

Happy MAR10 Day!

Mario World by Orioto

Mario World by Orioto

Break out your fake moustaches and warm up the Wii, because today is Mario Day! Because it’s Mar 10. Get it? I’m not sure when this holiday came about, but the Mario Bros are certainly worthy of celebrating!

Mario has appeared in over 200 video games, first appearing in Donkey Kong in 1981, where he was known as Jumpman.  His name was later changed to Mario in Donkey Kong Jr., named after Nintendo of America’s warehouse landlord. His twin brother, Luigi (named after a Seattle pizza joint called “Mario & Luigi’s”), was introduced in the 1983 arcade game Mario Bros.

The Mario brothers have had many professions including: carpenter, plumber, doctor, tennis player, ghost buster, and race car driver, and have had their images portrayed on everything from cereal boxes to the big screen. I think everyone has a soft spot for the Mario Bros. whether their first introduction to them was Donkey Kong or Super Mario Galaxy. They are universally recognized by gamers and non-gamers alike and the love of these icons shows no sign of slowing down.

I’ve rounded up some amazing Mario-related Etsy crafts for your enjoyment. Have a great Mario Day!

The Color of Things

Allure by black-dicefish

A couple of years ago I discovered that I have Synesthesia – a neurological condition that causes different senses to be combined, rather than separate. A common trait of people with Synesthesia (synesthetes) is always perceiving letters, numbers, and words with certain colors attached to them. For example, ‘A’ will always be red to me, ‘B’ is brown, ‘C’ is yellow, ‘D’ is navy blue, etc. I also see colored shapes when I hear certain sounds, and perceive textures when I smell certain things. My sister also has Synesthesia and she is the reason I discovered my own. Up until that point, I thought seeing each letter as a color was normal. There are over 60 known kinds of Synesthesia and my sister has traits that I do not, such as tasting voices and perceiving numbers with personalities.

Most people with Synesthesia are creative and artistic by nature. And since this condition involves a lot of color, I thought I’d gather a collection of pieces with beautiful color palettes, and also include art by syesthetes as well. And even if you don’t have this condition, everyone loves color!

Go Bold

30 Jan

You can tell by my hair that I don’t like to be subtle in my appearance. This sometimes applies to the jewelry I wear as well. I like all kinds of jewelry, but occasionally, I want something that makes a statement. Fortunately, if you feel the same way, there are many artists out there that create such pieces. Prepare to be noticed!

Winter Is Coming

Game of Thrones, Winter is Coming – coffee mug cup cozy by KnitnutbyJL

The weather is still relatively mild here in Nevada, but winter is just around the corner. In anticipation of this, I’ve found a collection of comfy, warm, and most importantly – geeky – items to keep you cozy while you hibernate in the Basement.

Everyone needs a pair of slippers. But you can go geeky without wearing those fuzzy monsters that look like they’re eating your feet. The slippers below are super cute and you could probably even go to the store with them without looking like you just rolled out of bed.
