Tuesday’s Treasury: Guys and Ghouls

7 May

The first time I heard a psychobilly song was on a Geico commercial of all places. After that, I sent away for a Th’ Legendary Shack*Shakers cd and have been in love with that type of music since. I’ve always been a fan of horror movies, Halloween, and creepiness in general, so it was easy to love other aspects of psychobilly subculture as well.

If you’re a fan of zombies, tattoos, and retro fashion, you might fall in love with it as well. Check out what these amazing Etsy sellers have made!

My Favorite Haunts

17 Apr

I’ve been a member of Etsy and DeviantART for a few years now, and have amassed quite a collection of favorite artists and shops. There are some that I like to visit periodically to see what’s new, because I simply love everything they create and can’t wait to see what they’ll have next. This week I thought I would share some of the artists and crafters I stalk (in a good way!) and maybe they’ll become a favorite of yours as well.

DirtyandDistressed is one of my favorite shops that I have yet to buy something from (eep!). They’re your outpost for the perfect clothing and accessories to complete any post-apocalyptic cosplay.

Kenneth Fairclough has a gallery of gorgeous environment and character concept art. I would want to play anything that these scenes were used in.

Obscure but Awesome

Have you ever played an amazing video game, but no one else seems to have heard of it? There are some great popular games out there, but there are other equally deserving titles that don’t get as much exposure. These gems deserve some attention and some more fan art made for them! I discovered there are  artists out there making art based on these games, but I would love to see more. I’ve asked Mom’s Basement members and other avid gamers about their favorite obscure games and created a gallery below of their picks.

Torin’s Passage

Torin’s Passage is a fantasy/adventure computer game from 1995. Despite being made by Al Lowe, creator of Leisure Suit Larry, this game is a family-friendly game I have fond memories of playing when I was a kid. You embark on a quest to find your captured parents, travelling through unique, nested planets and solving puzzles along the way.

After playing this game as a kid, I always loved the name Torin, and decided if I ever had a son, that’s what I would name him. And I did!

Nier

Nier is a SquareEnix game from 2010 that definitely doesn’t have the exposure it deserves. This beautiful, melancholy game features a gorgeous soundtrack, a storyline with twists and turns, and interesting replay value. I can’t tell you more or it would spoil it. Just go play it!

Go Bold

30 Jan

You can tell by my hair that I don’t like to be subtle in my appearance. This sometimes applies to the jewelry I wear as well. I like all kinds of jewelry, but occasionally, I want something that makes a statement. Fortunately, if you feel the same way, there are many artists out there that create such pieces. Prepare to be noticed!

Inspired by Vintage

In Boise, Idaho, there’s an amazing place called Antique World Mall. I could spend days wandering through the huge expanse of aisles, looking through the crowded shelves and glass cabinets and never see everything. They have everything vintage and antique imaginable and every time I go there I find something I have to take home with me. They are items that were probably commonplace and taken for granted, but somehow survived for decades without being discarded. And really, it’s those everyday items that help sum up an era of time and speak volumes about the people that lived then.

I love vintage and antique items, and am a little disappointed that collecting them is a trend now. I collect typewriters, among other things, and used to hunt through the discarded electronics in the backs of thrift stores for them. I once found a 1920’s Corona this way, priced at only $4.50. Those days are long gone. It’s difficult to find a typewriter for under $100 now. However, it’s much easier to find art and crafts inspired by vintage and antique items, or that have been incorporated into something new. Check out the wonderful items below!

The Finer Things

14 Nov

I love jewelry. I love bold, fun jewelry, understated, pretty pieces, and everything in between. There is a lot of geeky jewelry on Etsy, and much of it is of the fun and quirky variety, many of my own creations included. But sometimes I want to wear fine jewelry – something elegant that will stand the test of time. Luckily, there are artists on Etsy that have combined geekiness and fine jewelry, so you never have to choose between the two.

If you’re fond of dragons and fantasy, this ring should make you happy. It was created with a glass taxidermy eye and argentium silver.

Jewelsvine is one of my favorite shops. I have purchased from them in the past and still love my necklace. It was hard to choose just one item to feature, but I love this test tube necklace! Be sure to check out their shop for other awesomeness, like rocket lockets, skulls, robot kitties, and steampunk instruments.

I own a skull necklace from MichelleChangJewelry as well. She makes simple, elegant jewelry featuring skulls, foxes, hedgehogs, octopi and more.
