Tuesday’s Treasury: Guys and Ghouls

7 May

The first time I heard a psychobilly song was on a Geico commercial of all places. After that, I sent away for a Th’ Legendary Shack*Shakers cd and have been in love with that type of music since. I’ve always been a fan of horror movies, Halloween, and creepiness in general, so it was easy to love other aspects of psychobilly subculture as well.

If you’re a fan of zombies, tattoos, and retro fashion, you might fall in love with it as well. Check out what these amazing Etsy sellers have made!

Uncommon Objects

10 Apr

There are plenty of traditional forms of art out there that can be used to make awesome and geeky creations. But the artists featured this week have thought outside the box and transformed common, everyday objects and tools into items to help you geek out your living space in an unexpected way.

I never thought of looking for Cthulhu on a spoon, but here he is!

I’m a huge Fallout fan, and although I wouldn’t want my house to look like a Vault (talk about claustrophobic!), this light switch cover is too awesome for words.

There are some unique lamps out there, but this industrial/found object lamp is certainly at the top. It’s made from iron pipes and a vintage skull vodka bottle. And the rotating faucet is the on/off switch!

In case you’ve been sitting the basement for too long and haven’t noticed – it’s almost spring! I hate winter and can’t wait to start planting flowers and enjoying the outdoors. Not all of us have the luxury of large yards or gardens, but you can still perk up the outside of your house or apartment after a dreary winter with some beautiful art. I’m not a big fan of pink flamingos, masses of windchimes, and lawn gnomes littering one’s yard, but a few choice pieces of geeky outdoor art will let the neighbors know how awesome you are.

Go Bold

30 Jan

You can tell by my hair that I don’t like to be subtle in my appearance. This sometimes applies to the jewelry I wear as well. I like all kinds of jewelry, but occasionally, I want something that makes a statement. Fortunately, if you feel the same way, there are many artists out there that create such pieces. Prepare to be noticed!

The End is Nigh

Environment: POST-APOCALYPSE by inetgrafx

Tomorrow is officially No Year’s Eve, as many people believe 12/21/12 will be the end of the world, based on information from the Mayan calendar and paranoid scientists. Whether you believe the end is coming or not, it’s an excuse to party! I love all things post-apocalyptic, so tomorrow Melvin and I will be settling in for a long winter’s (dirt) nap with Fallout 3 and our coveted Twinkies.

If you won’t be busy stock-piling food or building a bunker, check out the awesome art below for ideas to make a kick-ass apocalypse party! It might be the last party you ever throw, so it ought to be good.

First, you’re going to need a location. Nuclear bunkers and abandoned buildings are great places to set the mood.

The Finer Things

14 Nov

I love jewelry. I love bold, fun jewelry, understated, pretty pieces, and everything in between. There is a lot of geeky jewelry on Etsy, and much of it is of the fun and quirky variety, many of my own creations included. But sometimes I want to wear fine jewelry – something elegant that will stand the test of time. Luckily, there are artists on Etsy that have combined geekiness and fine jewelry, so you never have to choose between the two.

If you’re fond of dragons and fantasy, this ring should make you happy. It was created with a glass taxidermy eye and argentium silver.

Jewelsvine is one of my favorite shops. I have purchased from them in the past and still love my necklace. It was hard to choose just one item to feature, but I love this test tube necklace! Be sure to check out their shop for other awesomeness, like rocket lockets, skulls, robot kitties, and steampunk instruments.

I own a skull necklace from MichelleChangJewelry as well. She makes simple, elegant jewelry featuring skulls, foxes, hedgehogs, octopi and more.

If you’re a gamer, MB’s own SketchyStories has some awesome jewelry for you, including this jumping Mario pendant, as well as a D-pad necklace, Link, and Minecraft pickaxe!
