Kiki’s Delivery Service…. Part I… Pancakes!

16 Nov

melvin pancakeJiji, if nobody comes in, I’m gonna have to eat pancakes forever and be fat, fat, fat!  And what am I supposed to do about that?

Well Kiki, Melvin and I can answer that for you.  Eat more pancakes!  Melvin and I thought it would be fun to do some recipes inspired by one of our favorite directors, Hayao Miyazaki.  In Kiki’s Delivery Service, Kiki ends up eating pancakes because she’s a little low on cash.  I think us fellow basement dwellers can relate to that.  So if you’re finding that your wallet is looking a little slim, and you’re starving, take a cue from Kiki and whip up some pancakes!  Kiki makes hers from a box, but we’re going to make ours from scratch.  Want to learn how easy it is to make pancakes from scratch?  Read on! The Digital Age

8 Aug

I’m a lover of traditional art. I love to see the paint strokes on canvas, the curves in sculpture, and to know that I or another artist created that work with their own hands. But this is the age of technology and computers, and digital art is becoming much more prevalent now. I must admit that I know nothing about digital painting, and perhaps that’s why I used to have more of an affinity towards traditional methods. But after finding so many amazing works of art created digitally, I couldn’t help but have a respect for the medium. I’m quite sure it takes as much skill to work digitally as it does with a physical medium. I believe the medium doesn’t matter; it’s what the artist can create with it.

Below are some of my favorite geeky digital masterpieces. After viewing these, I hope you will have as much respect for the medium as I do.

Majin Buu by Jonas Skoog

This painting of Dragon Ball Z’s Majin Buu is downright creepy. Kid Buu was always one of the scarier villains, but seeing him in a realistic  portrayal is even worse, but in a really awesome way.

Royal Assassin by sakimichan

This sexy assassin painting is gorgeous! I love all the gold and black tones used.

Redecorating The Basement

Home Sweet Home Cross Stitch by ArgentaCollaborative

I’ve been moving this week. I think it’s something we all dread (the packing and unpacking) and look forward to (moving to a better place.) This move has been particularly interesting for me. A year and half ago my husband lost his job and we were forced to live with relatives for much longer than planned. We moved from Wendover, Nevada, to Boise, Idaho, and then back to Wendover again when my husband was offered a job. Almost all of our items have been in storage for nearly two years and we’ve been busily blowing dust off things long forgotten and throwing away very expired Crisco and vitamins.
I am excited to unbox all of my favorite knick knacks and paintings and decorate our new place, but after almost two years of feeling like a squatter, I think I deserve a couple of new home décor items as well.
If you’re planning on moving out of the basement, or just want to perk it up, check out this awesome wish list of items sure to make any geek feel at home.

What’s more home-y than a hand-stitched sampler? If cross-stitch reminds you of your grandmother, just take a look at the photo above. It has a classic sentiment, but with a cute Mario Bros. twist, worthy of gracing the walls of any gamer’s castle.

Recycled Computer Mechanics Ring by StudioLaTouche

I’m a big fan of using found objects and up cycling. I’m not super environmentally conscious, (although there’s nothing wrong with that,) but I do believe that if you have materials and items that can be repurposed into something tasteful and useful, it’s better than throwing them away.
I love things that are organic, rustic, vintage, and post-apocalyptic themed. I create my own found object and post-apocalyptic jewelry on my Etsy site, Blastland. Hunting for new (old) objects to use is always fun. I’ve walked into the Idaho desert in January and plucked bullet shell casings out of the cold, muddy ground, excavated fossilized, opalized seashells and obsidian knapping, and scrounged through creepy abandoned trailers for rusty nuts and washers. Ebay is also a great source for transit tokens, keys, and other vintage items I can’t find on my own.
There are a surprising amount of geeky items created from found objects. I’m sure these artists enjoy hunting for their materials as much as I do, and have used them in extremely creative ways.
