Melvin’s Pick of the Day- 4/13/12- RavenwoodMasks

13 Apr

superhero maskToday is Friday the 13th, so you know what that means.  If you want to make sure bad luck doesn’t compound over the day, don’t walk under any ladders, don’t break any mirrors, and especially don’t let any black cats cross your path.  Well, unless it’s Felicia Hardy.  Then you don’t really have a choice.

Alyssa Ravenwood of Ravenwood Masks knows how to take control of this unlucky day and so can you!  Just by donning this beautiful leather mask you can become the Black Cat yourself.  With a mask like this, even Spiderman couldn’t resist you and your luck is sure to turn around.

If becoming the Black Cat is not quite your thing, but you would really love to have a mask of your own, never fear!  Alyssa creates other superhero masks such as Scarlet Witch and Marvel Girl, and other masquerade masks as well.  Stop by her shop and check them out!

Melvin’s Geek Song of the Day 11-19-11

19 Nov

There are many ways to become a superhero, each more absurd than the last.  Here’s a musical list of a whole bunch of ways to get super powers!

The Song: “Super Powers” by Ookla the Mok

The Lyrics:

I got bitten by a radioactive bug
I tried an experimental drug
I went out for a stroll on a gamma testing range
I found an enchanted Uru cane
I made a serum that made me small
I modified the serum so it would make me tall
I got radioactive isotope in my eye
A dying alien helped me accessorize
I gained the proportionate strength of a spider
Now I’m invincible and I can fly
I lost my sight and my other senses were heightened
I’m gonna put on my pajamas and go fight crime

The Artist: Ookla the Mok is a comedic musical group consisting of  Rand Bellavia and Adam English and sometimes others.  The perform mostly filk music, which is music related to sci fi/fantasy, so they definitely deserve to have the occasional geek song of the day!

Melvin’s Geek Song of the Day 9-17-11

17 Sep

You don’t need to wear your underwear on the outside of your pants to be a superhero.  You don’t need to be faster than a locomotive or be some rich guy with a bunch of neat gadgets.  Each and every one of us runs into all kinds of superheroes every single day, and each and every one of us IS a superhero, so hold your head high and keep saving the day like you always do!

The Song: “Superwoman” by Alicia Keys

alicia keysThe Lyrics:

‘Cause I am a Superwoman
Yes I am, yes she is
Still when I’m a mess, I still put on a vest
With an S on my chest
Oh yes, I’m a Superwoman

This is for all the mothers fighting
For better days to come
And all my women
All my women sitting here trying
To come home before the sun

The Artist: Alicia Keys was raised by her single mother, which was probably her first encounter with a superwoman.  Although classicaly trained, Keys has found great success as an R&B singer.  She has won numerous awards, proving herself to be a superwoman.Download Superwoman From Amazon!

Deviantly Geeky: Papercrafts!

8 Aug

The most I can do with a piece of paper is draw on it or fold it into a half ass airplane that gets about 3 seconds of air time. But check out this awesome craft that is pretty popular on DeviantArt. Papercrafts. Artists create templates and provide them online…these patterns are like glorified paper doll instructions that are really detailed. There’s two crafts here…the crafter who creates the template and the crafter who puts it together perfectly. This article is more hilighting the crafter who puts the pattern together to create the final product, but do note that all of the crafters link to the original artists. Or you can check out this blog for a listing of a bunch of different crafts (some featured here, so there’s lots of geeky goodness!) So if you would like to try your hand at recreating these awesome figures, then follow the links to the patterns! This is a great craft for kids so long as you do all the cutting (if you have kids of your own or get stuck babysitting!)

Check out this cool tutorial on how to make a papercraft Totoro!

Now, can you imagine making this?
